Cooler Clinics Online: jazzahead! + Becoming Export Ready

📅 Friday 11 September
⏰ 12pm
💻 Online | Free
👉️ Register: https://bit.ly/4qYTvyH (link in bio too)

What does it actually mean to be export ready as a jazz or improvising musician?

With applications currently open for the @jazzaheadde 2027 Showcases, this month’s Cooler Clinic looks at preparing your project for international opportunities — from putting together a strong showcase application to making sure you’re ready to capitalise on the opportunities that can follow.

IMC Director Kenneth Killeen is joined by Eddie Lee, Director of Sligo Jazz Project. Both have previously served on the jazzahead! showcase jury, offering a rare insight into what happens on the other side of the application process.

We’ll discuss:

→ What makes an application stand out
→ What juries are looking for when reviewing showcase applications
→ Why excellent audiovisual material is essential
→ Common mistakes — including the surprisingly important basics like checking your links
→ How to communicate your project clearly to an international industry audience
→ What being genuinely export ready looks like beyond getting the showcase
→ How to make the most of international industry opportunities if interest comes your way

We’ll also look at why applying matters even when you aren’t selected — and how a strong field of applications from Ireland can help demonstrate the depth, ambition and international potential of the Irish jazz and improvised music scene.

Whether you’re applying to jazzahead! this year or beginning to think about international showcases and touring more broadly, this session will help you understand what needs to be in place before you take that next step.

Over the summer, myself and @har.riet_nielsen were so inspired by Gareth Lockrane's @gareth_lockrane masterclass on transcription at the Sligo Jazz Project @sligojazz . So we decided to transcribe what Gareth had shown in the class: Hank Mobley's solo on "The Best Things in Life are Free" from the album Workout. I have learnt so much from it. It's a lot of fun to play too!

Waking Maeve is not all myth and history, it fills you on the truly rocking side of Sligo’s musical heritage. For example, did you know that Eric Clapton played in Strandhill? Clapton rocked the late, great Baymount Ballroom on 13 March 1979.

The star was living in a castle in Mayo at the time, trying to recover from the excesses of the rock and roll lifestyle. Clapton was billed as the greatest guitarist in the world. During his soundcheck, Clapton said he loved the ballroom’s amazing acoustics.

I would love to hear from anyone who either went to, or knows someone who actually went this gig.

Many of the eras top acts played the Baymount and Silver Slipper ballroom in the 1970s and 1980s, which was something of a Sligo musical institution. Acts like Pat McManus and Mama’s Boys, Johnny Logan, Bagatelle, the Fureys, the Dubliners, The Wolfe Tones, De Danann, the Chieftains, Chris Rea, the Hothouse Flowers, The Undertones, Dexys Midnight Runners, Marianne Faithful and Dusty Springfield helped fuel a massive cultural awakening. But tales of these musical adventure will have to wait.
Or if you would like to know more, go to the Rock n Roll in Stone Age Sligo section of Waking Maeve – a literary excavation of Sligo’s landscape, myth and heritage. (Link in bio :)

When you meet @wyntonmarsalis you can't help but be in awe of the calm, open willingness to engage with others, even after a majestic two set show at the @nationalconcerthall. Wynton is a titan, not only of the world of jazz, but music in general. His output as a musician, as a composer, as a leader of Jazz at the Lincoln Centre Orchestra @jazzdotorg is incredible. The respect with which he holds those past keepers of the flame, coupled with his desire to pass that fire onto the younger generation, through example and educational initiatives, is inspiring and life affirming.
The grace, the joy, the humanity, the passion with which Wynton and the Jazz at the Lincoln Centre Orchestra conducted their tour is a salutary lesson in the power of music and love, and will live in my heart and soul forever.
Thank you folks, it was a privilege, it was sublime.....🎶⚡️🎵
