This gig means a lot to me. My relationship with nightlife started from an obsession with DDR that shifted outward to happy hardcore, eurobeat, hardstyle, and breaks. I’d get these fliers for raves located anywhere from arcades and laser tag centers to abandoned warehouses or condemned ballrooms. I was a kandi kid back then, and a literal kid in high school. Outside of some anime con a friend of mine let me use his gear, I was maybe 16/17, and it was the first time I ever touched any dj equipment. This was also the first time I experienced music/dj/industry/nightlife related sexism. It was something that became a barrier, a bitter taste that curbed interest. Eventually, I found my own way; extending my video art practice to live mixing visuals in nightlife. I always knew that I wanted to be someone who contributes creatively to the scene; and, someone who avidly supports others. The chauvinistic nonsense of course did not magically disappear.
.
Yet, the nagging feeling did not stop; the curiosity, interest, and music rattling in my head did not fade out. During the pandemic, I deeply analyzed this history. I realized, in many ways, by removing myself from the equation and not pursuing - or at least trying to learn - deejaying I was letting those negative experiences, encounters, and characters win. I figured, it was time to stop making excuses and learn with what I had. Just my computer at first. Then a traktor mixer. Then cdjs&now playing with vinyl. I am no expert, I am still and will always be learning. I’m excited to see what it all brings and hope you all will be by my side dancing.
