A broad coalition of community organizations and individuals will gather on Wednesday, August 5 at 4 p.m. outside the Eastport Port Authority in Eastport to fight the proposed DeepGreen Western Passage underwater AI data center and demand that the City Council advance two citizen‑initiated ordinances without amendment ahead of the 6 p.m. public hearing. The Eastport Coalition for Healthy Oceans (ECHO) and Maine PSL are calling this press conference and rally to announce to the broader public: that not only is there popular opposition to the data center, but also that we have successfully petitioned these new ordinances! This action will allow residents to oppose the extractive infrastructure project before the scheduled City Council hearing where only short, limited input from community members is permitted. The proposed $413 million, 400‑acre underwater AI data center raises serious environmental concerns — including potential increases in water temperature in Passamaquoddy Bay, one of the fastest-warming marine environments in the world. These risks affect communities across Maine and Canada as well as Tribal nations. We say NO to parasitic projects that threaten our way of life to only benefit the billionaires. Join us: 🗓 August 5th 🕑 4:00 PM 📍 Eastport Port Authority (141 Water St, Eastport) 💻 Endorse this action online at https://noeastportdatacenter.me (Link in bio) OUR WATERS. OUR FUTURE. OUR FIGHT!

Meet the panelist for NHPR's By Degrees Climate Summit! 💧🌱 Register to join at nhpr.org/events Mara Hoplamazian is the lead reporter and host of NHPR’s podcast Safe to Drink, a four-part series about the water contamination story that keeps repeating in town after town — and about the people who fought for answers through a maze of chemistry, regulations, and illnesses. Throughout their career, Victor Davila has used expertise in power mapping, facilitation, base building and campaign development to preserve native habitats, teach ecological skateboard design at the University of Vermont, push climate policy through legislative gridlock and explore Antarctica on expedition. Julia Varshavsky studies how chemicals like PFAS affect maternal and child health. Her work focuses on translating research into real-world impact, using systematic review and community-engaged approaches to inform decision-making at the individual, community and policy levels.

Member organizations of the Maine Climate Action Now coalition have a common vision of the world we hope to build in the future – a world where everyone, regardless of their identity, has freedom of speech, due process, protection from undue harm, and the ability to experience nature and the outdoors without fear. Right now, we are experiencing a concerted and targeted effort against these shared values. Maine Climate Action Now members understand the importance of this moment and have been clearly affirming that immigrant justice is directly connected to their work. We have been providing resources, speaking out in support, and being physically present for our immigrant neighbors and communities being targeted in Maine.  Our organizations recognize immigrant justice is connected to climate justice in many ways: * Immigrant and other vulnerable communities often suffer the worst environmental harms * Resource scarcity caused by the climate crisis is a major driver of migration * Outdoor spaces should be sanctuaries for peace and calm, not places of fear * Free speech and peaceful assembly allow us to show public support for climate policy * Standing up for our neighbors shows the power of community organizing in action
Since last summer, MCAN has been allied with People’s Coalition for Safety and Justice, which created the @mainesolidarityfund. This fund is designed to provide rapid, direct, and equitable support to community members facing increased detention, targeted harassment, policy rollbacks, and systemic discrimination. Please consider supporting this work.

@maineimmigrantrights, one of MCAN’s members, has created a resource hub and hotline, helping Maine immigrants and their allies meet their basic needs, know their constitutional rights, plan for potential detentions and deportations, support detainees, and volunteer and donate to organizations and key funds.

In solidarity,

That’s a wrap! 🎬✨ Last Thursday, SAFE hosted its second annual fundraiser event, a film screening of @emergentcitydoc at @cinemasalem. 🎙️ The event included our land acknowledgment, a proper introduction of the board, appreciation to our amazing sponsors, and remarks from Representative Manny Cruz @repmannycruz 🏆 SAFE awarded two community members for their leadership in climate initiatives. Matt Buchanan of @salemk12ma and @mackparkfarm was awarded the Local Climate Champion Award. Stacy Kilb of the @cityofsalem was awarded the Speak Up! Award. 🍿 The main event was the screening of the film Emergent City. Attendees left the film feeling inspired by the real events that took place in New York and the resilience of the Sunset Park Community in the face of gentrification. If you crave a rewatch or missed us last week, no worries! SAFE will be bringing the film to other community spaces next year. ⭐️ Thank you again to our sponsors and donors who made not only this fundraiser a success, but for sustaining SAFE and our efforts. Last month, GAIA’s U.S. Methane Reduction & Environmental Justice Cohort gathered in New Orleans for a two-day in-person convening. Thirteen groups representing a dozen states came together to deepen collaboration, political analysis, and shared strategy on landfill methane and environmental justice. During our time, we traveled down River Road through Louisiana’s River Parishes, part of the region commonly known as “Cancer Alley.” It’s an 85-mile stretch along the Mississippi River between New Orleans and Baton Rouge, lined with about 200 fossil fuel and petrochemical plants that produce 25% of the nation’s petrochemical products. Some refer to this area as “Death Alley” for the extreme risks of cancer and death due to pollution. We were welcomed by @thedescendantsproject, which is transforming a former plantation into a museum, trauma-informed space, and living archive. The Woodland Plantation is the historic site of the largest slave revolt in the U.S. South that you’ve probably never heard about because its history was violently suppressed. It is also the birthplace of jazz pioneer Edward “Kid” Ory, who influenced musical legends like Louis Armstrong. Today, the Woodland Plantation hosts temporary exhibits on the 1811 Slave Revolt and the plantation-to-petrochemical through-line. [continued in caption]
