Due to the ongoing government shutdown, millions of Americans have lost access to their SNAP benefits. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) has allowed millions of low or no-income Americans to buy groceries. With these benefits being delayed and reduced, it is imperative that we support members of our community that experience food insecurity. At The Gala Pride & Diversity Center, we believe access to food is a fundamental human right. The federal government's choice to freeze SNAP benefits, and leave millions of Americans in a position of uncertainty is cruel and inhumane. Starting today, we are opening The GPDC Free Pantry. During our open hours, anyone can come by for free, shelf-stable food, no questions asked. Stop by during our walk-in hours or during any of our scheduled group hours to access the pantry. Donation link in bio!

As the holiday season draws near, we invite you to join the Chosen Family Potluck, hosted by The Gala Pride & Diversity Center and the NAACP SLO County Branch — an all-ages event designed to bring together the LGBTQIA2S+ community and our allies for a warm and festive Friendsgiving. This event is about celebrating the people we choose to call family, sharing a meal, and creating new memories with friends, old and new. Welcome & Mingling: The event kicks off at 4:00 PM with casual mingling and time to get to know fellow attendees. Dinner Served: At 5:00 PM, we’ll share a potluck-style meal, offering a variety of dishes from community members. You are encouraged to bring a dish, but it’s not required—there’s always plenty of food to go around! Please note, if you do bring a dish, we ask that you provide a list of ingredients to accommodate those with dietary restrictions. All Are Welcome: Whether you’re attending alone, with friends, or bringing your family, everyone is welcome to join in on the celebration. RSVP Link in Bio!

The Gala Pride and Diversity Center mourns the loss of Black, transgender activist and Stonewall veteran Miss Major Griffin-Gracy. Miss Major was a fierce advocate for the rights of the most vulnerable among us, particularly Black trans women, sex workers, and the formerly incarcerated. Driven by her personal experiences, she worked tirelessly to uplift and support her community throughout her life. Beginning in the early 1980's Miss Major worked as a caretaker for people with HIV/AIDS in New York, and later drove San Francisco’s first mobile needle exchange. Her commitment to intersectional justice carried over to her work as Director of the Transgender Gender Variant Intersex Justice Project (TGIJP), where she mentored incarcerated trans, gender variant, and intersex people and helped them access legal and social services. She later founded House of GG, a retreat center for trans and gender-nonconforming leaders in the Southern US. In an interview with journalist Toshio Meronek for her memoir she described her role as an LGBTQ+ elder; "When younger people call me mother, or grandmother, I feel as though it’s an honor. To them, it’s like, ‘Here’s an older trans woman who survived, and who’s out there still raising hell.’ Elders can teach the younger people to pick up the fight. In my mind it’s what they must do". She will be remembered as visionary, an activist and an elder, who fought tirelessly for the liberation of Black, trans, and formerly incarcerated people, as well as the LGBTQ+ community at large. Though she is no longer with us, her work will continue to uplift our community for generations to come.
