Small File Media Festival is this weekend Oct 17-18 @smallfile
Curated by Laura Marks @lauraumarks, Mena El Shazly @elshazly1328, Radek Przedpełski @unquietimurid, Joni Schinkel @funwithgod, Chelsea Birks, Joey Malbon @joey_chaos, Alma F. Garcia Angeles.

Small File writes, “We invite you to celebrate six punk-chic programs of vibe-shifting, aura-casting Small File ecomedia”. “Stretching the boundaries of cinema across hitherto unvisited cosmologies. Small files are media art’s sustainable avant-garde.” “Using ingenious techniques from ‘obsolete’ cameras to precise camerawork, handmade animation, and pixel-bedazzled compression.”

I tried to make a low resolution piece specifically for this festival but failed. So I compressed an existing piece down to 1.44 MB/min.

Degrading the already ‘bad/poor’ quality footage was a tough battle. Not easy. Why did I keep struggling? Because the lo-fi pixels mesmerized me.

I had to delete the music soundtrack. This new 10 minute version is silent. No sound. Will the audience survive? Stuck in a movie theatre seat, suffocated by silence. I'm worried.

Hansel and Gretel Get Kicked (the silent version) screens in the program 'The Chaos of Quantity, Part One: Alien Capitalism' curated by Mena El Shazly and Radek Przedpełski.

program description:
"Quantity itself is simultaneously rational and irrational,” remarked the Khartoum-based Crystalist conceptualists. The twin entangled programs [The Chaos of Quantity, Part One: Alien Capitalism & Part Two: Telepathic Computation] perform this contradiction oscillating between the allure of consumerism and the potential of the image. Both programs investigate the relentless accumulation of capital using different strategies. "Alien Capitalism" stages resistance against the chokehold of commodities. "Telepathic Computation" reappropriates capital for arcane purposes. The 1976 Crystalist manifesto states, "in response to this quantum chaos, Crystalist thought emerges and proposes the teleological quantity, which is pleasure." From the largest to the smallest video, this program is loud in the most silent way.

My film “Welcome to Canada Ludmila, Katia, Bobby September 1994 Vancouver, BC” is screening @smallfile next weekend Oct. 18 at 4PM at the Cinematheque! It’s part of series 3: voidmaxxing (joy that kills).

A personal project born out of finding VHS tapes of my parents’ first of week in Canada after immigrating from Yugoslavia during the Milosevic regime. And then digitizing them. It follows the perspective of a diaspora kid seeing secondary archives and then putting on the VHS tapes and processing what they’re seeing as they connect that history with their family’s experience.

It’s been really rad to explore the small file process and participate in eco-friendly ways of media production by celebrating low-res aesthetics!

$The Small File Media Festival Today we are sharing an event that is close to Low-tech Magazine's ethos: the @smallfile media festival seventh iteration. The festival focuses on eco-conscious moving image works, showcasing 85 films selected from over 400 submissions worldwide spanning narratives, documentaries, glitchfests, etc. These small-file ecomedia embrace the aesthetics of file compression and low resolution and lay the groundwork for a new experimental film movement in the digital age. About Small Files At a mere 1.44 megabytes per second — a tiny fraction of the bitrate of standard video — small files travel lightly and under the radar, ready for a world where governments snoop and infrastructures collapse. Yet on the user's end they bust out big: using ingenious techniques from "obsolete" cameras to precise camerawork, handmade animation, and pixel-bedazzled compression, this year's filmmakers, artists, activists, media pirates, and rogue technologists show that cinema doesn't have to be big to be beautiful. Small files are media art's sustainable avant-garde! 📌Date & Location 17-18 Oct. 2026 Cinematheque in Vancouver, CA. 🪧More Info https://2026.smallfile.ca. 🎥 Image “Andromeda Interlaced” by Jay Villalobos, USA, 2026. 10 min, 13.4 MB “Andromeda Interlaced” by Jay Villalobos, USA, 2026. 10 min, 13.4 MB$
