20 years ago today, the Paulson clan landed in Texas! We made immediate lifelong friends in Hudnall Farm – and Holly and I and our young children (11, 7, 3) started learning about living in this great big state. A lot has happened since…
We are on our third city across the state – from DFW (Keller) to Houston (Montgomery) and now Austin (Dripping Springs). We still don't drive pick-ups, we still don't know which end of a gun to hold, and we still don't drink sweet tea. But… we do compare which H-E-B’s are better/worse, we do still love a stop at Buc-ee’s, we are Tex-Mex and BBQ connoisseurs, and we have turned into massive PBR fans (bull riding, not the beer) … Go Gamblers!
Mack is 31, Tate is 27 and Sayde nearly 24 and we have celebrated 1 Aggie and 2 Longhorn college graduations. All our children have amazing partners in their lives, thank you to Shelby, Audrey and Nathaniel for loving on them all. Mack and Shelby gave us our first grandbaby Norah who is 6, followed by Eloise who is 2 and just last week, Jones was born! Of all the names I have been called, I think "Popo" might be the best one! Holly (“Momo”) is still the rock at the center of everything for all of us and she remains my best friend and biggest supporter.
Professionally, this chapter has been the gift of a lifetime. From what we accomplished together at Vaquero, to building Bluejack National from the ground up with Tiger Woods and an incredible team, a short and enjoyable stint at Silo Ridge in the Hudson Valley and then getting back to Texas to lead Driftwood Golf & Ranch Club. Friday was my last official day after a nearly 25-year adventure with Discovery Land Company. I am forever grateful to my teammates who made the ride what it was, I will always be cheering for your success.
And tomorrow, June 1, I start a new chapter as President & COO of Mackenzie Holdings, LLC, partnering with my new friend Dave Rogenmoser. First order of business - building The Mackenzie Club, a new private indoor golf and social club concept, with our flagship opening in Austin in late 2026. Excited doesn't quite cover it.
Thanks to all of you who have made these 20 years what they've been. Texas, forever.

8th grade was a difficult year for me as most of my friends went off to high school. I flunked 3rd grade, so my earliest friends were always a grade above me. Senior year in high school was the worst, but that’s another story.

This is Holly. She transferred to Vernon Junior High that same year. This fiery, feral chick reminded me a lot of my big sis. Smart, pretty and ready to throw hands at any time. So easy to talk to. Her humor and wit kept me in the moment. We had a lot of classes together that year. She moved the very next year. We lost touch, as what happened in the pre-smartphone, social media era.
When I moved away right after high school, our paths crossed again. And then she moved away to college.
Somehow we reconnected ten years later.
These days, we don’t live near each other, but social media helps us stay connected. Last night we were able to meet up. It was a wonderful surprise to be able to have such deep conversations.
As some of you know, a part of my creative research investigates mortality, life after death, trans generational phenomenon and the spirit realm. We had so much to talk about.
Holly, every time you’ve popped into my life it’s been profound. May you be love, may you be loved.
