From all of us here in Albuquerque, we are wishing you a Happy Indigenous Peoples’ Day!

🏃🏽‍♀️We started out early this morning with a beautiful park run. The paved loop is 1 mile, so folks could choose their distance. Folks came in thinking they would do only 2-3 miles, but everyone did anywhere from 3-6 miles! You know how it is…once you start running on a cool, gorgeous morning that running high hits and you just keep going.

📣Afterward, we made some signs for our cheer station that will be at the Duke City Marathon this upcoming Sunday.

🤗And it was so good to have @leenbug from Duke’s Track Club join us. Thank you to everyone who came out. It was such a beautiful way to start the day!

The days are getting shorter which means that this is our LAST Tuesday evening run until the spring time change gives us back those long days.

⭐️Trail Run, 2.4 miles
🗓️Tues, Oct 6 at 6 pm
📍Pino Trail Loop (282 ft of elevation gain)
🚙Park at Elena Gallegos Open Space. Drive through the front gate and follow the road around until you see the “Doña Elena Gallegos” brown sign. Park near there (see 2nd and 3rd photos for exact meeting location).
💲Parking is $1 per vehicle payable by card at machine in parking lot.
👚REMEMBER: to “dress up” all month at our events by wearing your fav/memorable race T-shirts.
🔦Recommended: Sunset is around 6:46 pm on Tues, so you may want to bring a headlamp to finish up your run. We will have two extra on hand if you need to borrow.
🏃🏽‍♀️We will have a sweeper for this run so no one gets left behind.
🤗Native women runners and NWR allies welcome.
✅FREE to join.

10/2 Update: We are reposting because we previously had a wrong date for Indigenous People’s Day. All other info remains the same.

It’s already October?!?! This month sneaked in and decided it wanted to be a BUSY month for our run club. Check out all the fun opportunities to run, hike, or cheer.

⭐️Trail Run, 2.4 miles
🗓️Tues, Oct 6 at 6 pm
📍Pino Trail Loop
🚙Park at Elena Gallegos Open Space. Parking is $1. Pay by card at machine in parking lot.
🔦Since sunset is scheduled for 6:45 pm, bring a headlamp or light you can use on the trail. We will have a sweeper (the last person running behind everyone) with a headlamp for this trail run so no one gets left behind. If you need to borrow a headlamp, we will have 2 extra on hand.

⭐️The Big Tesuque (Big T) Trail Race, 12 mi
🗓️Sat, Oct 10. Race starts at 9 am. The fun run/walk starts at 8 am.
📍Aspen Vista Picnic Ground on Hyde Park Road, Santa Fe, NM.
✅Thank you to Wings of America who was kind enough to offer free registration for Native runners.
📸We will do a group photo w/NWR sign right before the race briefing (around 8:40 am).

⭐️Indigenous People’s Day Run, 3 mi
🗓️Mon, Oct 12, 8 am
📍Academy Hills Park. Meet near the playground.
📣After the run, we will be making posters for our Duke City marathon cheer station. Some posters and markers will be provided, but feel free to bring your own supplies.

⭐️Duke City Marathon Cheer Station
🗓️Sun, Oct 18. Starting time TBA.
📍Exact Location TBA.
🏃🏽‍♀️Since we have several NWR runners lining up for the various Duke City distances, we are setting up a cheer station. Friends and family welcome to cheer with us.
📣Bring your cow bells and posters.

⭐️Group Hike, 4.2 miles
🗓️Sat, Oct 24 at 8:30 am
📍South Piedra Lisa Trail
⛰️This hike has 1,263 ft of elevation gain in the first 2.1 miles so recommend you bring water and snacks to carry on the trail.

And because it’s Halloween month, you’re invited to “dress up” for all of our events this month by sporting your favorite race or fun run T-shirts.

Here are ALL the details for our Saturday, Sep 19 Anniversary Party!

Come join us to celebrate…
⭐️NWR ABQ’s 2nd Anniversary
🗓️Sat, Sep 19, 6 - 8 pm
📍SIPI Hogan, 9169 Coors Blvd NW, Albuquerque, NM
🚙After the gate, drive straight (east) and continue on that road for about a quarter mile. The hogan will then be on your left.
🎉Come ready to play a few games, eat NACHOS, celebrate our 2nd year as a run club, and win some giveaways.
📖Nicole, the group lead, will also share some highlights/photos from her France/Italy/Switzerland Run the Alps to inspire us to dream big running dreams. With that as the inspirational appetizer, we will then share come running/race grant opportunities.
🤗NWR ABQ runners and NWR allies are welcome!
✅NEW for this year…we will host a running gear swap at the party. Swipe ➡️ for more details.
🏃🏽‍♀️No run this year. Just come have fun inside.
🙋🏽‍♀️Looking for 2 volunteers to help with the party. Easy jobs but we do ask that you arrive 20 min early to help set up. Dm if interested.

See you there!

#nativewomenrun #runabq #runnm

What is the Running Gear Swap?

⭐️It’s an opportunity for you to share any new or gently used running/hiking items that you don’t use with other Native women in our run club!
✅While it’s called a “Gear Swap,” participants do not have to bring anything to donate or “swap” to participate. Those who wish to participate should bring their gear a few minutes early so we can set up an area for the items. You will have an opportunity to peruse the Gear Swap items during Nacho Eating Time.
🤗FREE to participate.

🧢Anything leftover will be donated so you don’t have to take it home (unless you want to).
❓Feel free to reach out with any questions.

REMINDER: We’re BACK at it this evening (9/8) with a trail run at Copper Trailhead. Check below for details for this run and our other two events this month.

⭐️Trail Run, 4 mi
🗓️Tues, Sep 8 at 6 pm
📍Copper Trailhead. Located in the Sandia Foothills. Take Tramway to Copper Ave. The trailhead is .3 mi at the end of the road.
🚗Park at the trailhead or do street parking near the trailhead parking lot.
💦Bring water to carry on the run.
🏃🏽‍♀️This is a hilly out and back run. We will run 2 miles to the covered picnic table that is shortly after the Embudo trailhead parking lot.

⭐️NWR ABQ 2 Year Anniversary Party
🗓️Sat, Sep 19 at 6-8 pm
📍SIPI Hogan
🤗Come celebrate our run club’s anniversary with a fun look back over our first two years, NACHOS, games, a short storytelling session about Nicole’s running trip to the Alps, and giveaways.
🧢We will also host a running gear and clothing swap at the party. Stay tuned for more details later this week.
🏃🏽‍♀️NO RUN this time. Just come ready to eat nachos and enjoy your evening.

⭐️Evening Run, 2, 3, and 4 mi options
🗓️Tues, Sep 22 at 6 pm
📍Alameda/Rio Grande Open Space
🏃🏽‍♀️Paved path that we will run out and back. The path also runs next to a dirt trail, so folks can run either surface.
✅Due to this being a flat, paved path, this is a great opportunity for walkers to join the group.

FYI: Since it’s starting to get dark earlier, you’ll notice that we moved our evening runs to 6 pm this month. We will keep that 6 pm slot through October until time change.
Once the fall time change happens, we will take a break from evening runs until spring (exception: we will do a Christmas lights run in Dec).

Looking forward to running with you!

Hi friends! Our group lead, Nicole, is out of town currently so here’s just a quick post so you can save the dates!

More details for each of these events will be shared in early September. Note: we did move up the time for the Tuesday evening runs since it just started to get dark a little earlier. We want people to feel comfortable finishing their runs, and not feel they have to rush at the end.

See you soon🤗

It's been a week since we completed the 2026 Remembrance Run and I'm getting real emotional while putting my running clothes through the wash. I know this experience has forever changed how I feel about running. Thank you Remaining Native Impact Campaign and the amazing community that made this run possible. It's a very different feeling to be running with so much meaning.

@ku_stevens' story is incredibly inspiring. If you ever get the chance to catch a screening of @remainingnative, please do yourself a favour and see it. It has given me faith in people, community, healing, and the human spirit.

🧡 For those who survived, those who didn't, and those who never made it home 🧡

It's a week now since we landed in Reno. I did not want to leave. I am so grateful for the hard work and humility of @ku_stevens, his mother Misty and father Delmar, the Stevens family and their community in the Paiute Tribe in Yerington, the @remainingnative documentary team, and the people that came from nearby and across the country to participate and support the Remembrance Run. I have never felt so welcomed, supported, and at home in a place I've never been before. The land I was privileged enough to run on is so beautiful, so vast, and so encompassing that I feel like a changed person.

Thank you for the photos and the running @smanitowabi and @rising_hearts crew!

I'm honored to have gotten the chance to run with such inspiring athletes, advocates and individuals. Miigwetch, until next time 🧡✊️

I am so grateful to have been able to participate in this year’s Remembrance Run, along with @smanitowabi and @ellicul_lucy as part of Team @rising_hearts 💕

Over the course of two days, we retraced the 50-mile journey that @ku_stevens great grandfather Frank Quinn took when he escaped from the Stewart Indian School. He was abducted and escaped multiple times from the boarding schools. He was 8 years old when he escaped for the first time.

There’s a lot I’m still reflecting on and one of the things I kept thinking about was the fact that we had all the shoes, clothing, gear, nourishment, and hydration we needed to complete this journey. The desert is beautiful but unforgiving. Children like Frank escaped with nothing but the clothes they had on their backs and journeyed across the desert. They had knowledge of the landscape and a love for their families and their tribe that propelled them towards home. But they were still babies, exposed to the elements and fighting to survive… resisting assimilation and what ultimately became a death camp for so many children.

There’s more that I’ll share later… for now, thank you @ku_stevens @mistevens2 @impaigebee @jess__epstein @remainingnative and everyone who contributed to making this run possible. I’m grateful for everyone who shared their stories, their songs and their medicine. And thank you Shayla and Missy for being great teammates!! Love that we got to go on this journey together 💗

Let’s get out of town and go for a hike in the mountains! This is your chance to head up to 10,000 ft and hike the beautiful 10k trail. All the details below⬇️

⭐️Group Hike, 5.3 miles
🗓️Sat, Aug 8th at 8 am.
📍10K North Trailhead on the east side of the Sandia Mountains outside of Albuquerque, NM.
📈Elevation gain = 800 ft
💦Bring water and snacks you can carry on the hike.
⛰️The trail is at 10,000 ft (ABQ sits at around 5,300 ft.), so you may get more thirsty/hungry than you normally would at lower elevation hikes. (That’s code for bring extra snacks!)
🥾This is a nice green hike in the woods with a beautiful view at the top.
🚽Toilets are available at the trailhead, but no running water.
🚙You can put the 10k Trail into Google Maps for directions.
☕️Need caffeine on the way in? Make a stop at Cabra Coffee in Cedar Crest to fuel up.

TRAIL RUN OPTION
🏃🏽‍♀️Those training for the Mt Taylor 50k in September may wish to run the trail ahead of the hikers. OR you can hike with us, and then afterward go across the street and run the 10k South Trail. If you do both trails, it’s around 10 miles, and you can use your car as a personal aid station.
⚠️Note: trail runners should plan to be self-supported since the main group will only be hiking the 10k North Trail.
