📞 Just because someone knows your NRIC number doesn’t mean they’re from an official authority.

Your NRIC number may be known to others, because you use it in places like the bank, clinic or hospital.

If you receive a suspicious call from someone claiming to be a government official, verify their identity by contacting the agency directly or call the ScamShield helpline at 1799.

Is your NRIC number enough to prove who you are?

Your NRIC number tells you apart from others accurately. But only your physical NRIC or digital IC, with security features like your matching photograph, proves it is really you.

Received a call or SMS asking you to transfer money? Over the phone, Government officials will never ask you to transfer money or disclose your bank login details.

Remember: all Government SMSes are sent from gov.sg, and don’t trust a caller just because they can cite your NRIC number.

If in doubt, call the agency’s hotline or the ScamShield helpline at 1799.

Why is it unsafe to use NRIC numbers as passwords?

Your NRIC number may be known to others because you use it in some settings like the bank, clinic or hospital.

Hence, from 2027, the Personal Data Protection Commission will step up enforcement against organisations that use NRIC numbers as default passwords.

When do Government agencies use your full NRIC number?

The Government will use your full NRIC number when it’s necessary to tell you apart from others accurately. For example, at banks, clinics, or hospital. Otherwise, your NRIC number will not be used.
