What does it take to prepare students to shape AI, not just use it? Here's a look back at Investing in Ethical #CS & #AI Education during @oaklandtechweek.

Led by Kirsten Lundgren of the #KaporFoundation, with co-hosts @oaklandedfund and @nuoakland, this forum brought together leaders from education, policy research, and philanthropy to discuss where #ComputerScience and AI #education in #California are headed, and what it will take to get there equitably.

Thank you to our speakers for sharing their insight and experience:

Allison Scott, Ph.D., Kapor Foundation
Alix Gallagher, @stanford
Jennifer Ahn, @leadbylearning_
Sam Berg, @ousdnews
Cindy Lora, @smash_program

We look forward to continuing to spotlight the promising work in #Oakland that equips students and educators with the knowledge and agency to become critical consumers and ethical producers of AI and #technology. Thank you again to everyone who joined us!

“The soul always knows what to do to heal itself. The challenge is to silence the mind.” — Caroline Myss

I’m so proud to announce that SoUL has placed 2nd nationally! 🥈

This journey has been nothing short of beautiful. After placing first at our site, we advanced to the national competition, and I’m incredibly grateful for every step that brought us here.

SMASH at Spelman has given me so much more than the opportunity to grow in STEM , it has given me a true and genuine sisterhood with my teammates and friends. Watching an idea rooted in healing and hope come to fruition has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.

Fruition has never felt so good. 😊 @smash_program

The SMASH Program is a residential STEM experience that helps students strengthen their academic skills, expand their leadership, and grow through community.

During my time there, I learned in a way that stayed with me, faced challenges that pushed me forward, and met people who changed how I see my future and myself.

When applying to SMASH, I never expected the experience I would receive. This program has shown me what growth looks like when you are willing to be challenged and supported.

I gained the opportunity to introduce and moderate a panel of professionals, built a brotherhood that means a lot to me, and learned more about myself and who I am becoming!

I am grateful for the opportunity @smash_program has given me and everything this program has allowed me to experience!

I also want to thank my teacher @thesocialblenerd for supporting my journey and writing my endorsement, and my family for always encouraging me and standing beside me throughout this experience.

“Associate yourself with people of good quality, for it is better to be alone than in bad company.” - Booker T. Washington

SMASH Morehouse valued this by creating an environment where students shared the same drive to learn, lead, and grow.

The support, trust, and unity built throughout the program reflected what brotherhood looks like when people are committed to encouraging one another, having thoughtful conversations, and pushing each other toward growth. @smash_program

On June 13th I was selected to attend SMASH Academy and would be given the opportunity to stay at Morehouse College for two weeks. While here I enrolled in two rigorous courses such as Electrical Engineering and Python/Data Science. At the beginning I endured so many challenges but with the brothers I’ve made I’m so grateful that I got to face those challenges with them. I didn’t expect to become a different person out of this experience! This one in a lifetime opportunity has definitely impacted my life in the present, but it will greatly impact my future. Thank you @smash_program!

Joshua was selected to attend the SMASH residency program @morehouse1867 for the next 3 weeks. It’s an intense summer program that prepares young men entering their senior year of high school for majoring in computer science.
Wish him good luck throughout the program
