Hong Kong 1999 - IWUF World Championships

My man @nustylz stopped by the Gym last week and got me reminiscing. It’s wild that this was 27 years ago. Damn!

I had gotten to the quarter finals two year before in Rome beating Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, then losing to Ukraine. In Hong Kong I was on my third camp training under @cungle185 and felt very confident heading into the event. I drew the returning World Champion from Iran and felt I was winning the first round until I got cut on the bridge of my nose, stopping the Fight. Womp Womp!

I’ve been in the Final game for 30 years now and am blessed for the experiences I’ve had around the World as a Fighter and a Coach! #UntilTheWheelsFallOff

Now here’s a little story that must be told...

I had one of my best performances in this fight. I also walked out of it with my nose on the other side of my face. I hit Peter with everything I had. If I had a kitchen sink I would’ve hit him with that too but he just wouldn’t go down. Then early in the 5th round he threw a hook kick. I saw his heel fly in front of my eyes and felt a click then a warm oozing from my nose. “Well that’s probably not good” was my thought. Finished the round and went to my corner and they gave me a strange look. Got my hand raised, a shiny new belt, and when I finally got back to the locker room, a rearranged face. Now you think that this story is over but it’s ready to begin...

So my nose is clearly in need of some straightening so I go to the ringside Dr. to see what he can do. Again, the strange look! He gives it a try, I almost pass out. He then tells me he can’t get a proper grip, that I gotta do it myself. Now I have the strange look! Ok, 2 tears in a bucket, fxkit, let’s do this! First try I hear some grinding and feel it move a bit, and oh shooting pain but it only moved a little. Second try, more shooting pain, I see a flash of white light and my knees buckle a little. Ok I’m done, give me my medical slip I’ll have this fixed by a professional. I should’ve gone straight to the ER but I wanted to celebrate my win, too many of my big wins I spent at the ER. Went the next day... To late to reset it, it’s already solidifying. Will need to rebrake it and have a plastic surgeon reset it. Did I tell you the Fight was a week before Xmas? Try to find a plastic surgeon in the country around Xmas. So I looked at myself, I could breathe out of both nostrils. Well I wasn’t that good looking to begin with, I guess this is my new face!

Moral of the story... Some guys just won’t get knocked out. Some Fights don’t end up the way you think it will. Keep your hands up high and go to the ER even if you don’t want to! #UntilTheWheelsFallOff

A good training partner doesn’t just help you improve. They help build the culture of the entire gym.

Control your intensity. Match your partner’s level. Communicate.

Not every round is a fight, and not every drill is an opportunity to prove how tough you are. There is a time to push and a time to slow things down.

Your job is to challenge your partner without taking away their ability to learn. Help the newer students build confidence, give experienced partners good work, and speak up when something doesn’t feel right.
