I spent a week in mid-March photographing bald eagles near Homer, Alaska. Eagles gather there to fish in the open waters of Kachemak Bay; thick ice covers almost everything else. For several days, and thanks to our very able Captain Alan, we were one of only a couple of boats to make it out of the frozen harbor in Homer. It was slow-going, but we were able to break through two hundred yards of really thick ice before reaching open water. I couldn’t have asked for a more epic adventure. I took some 20,000 photos—a third of the other photographers in our group—hereinafter known as the “smoking shutters.” Here’s a sample of eagles in various settings. I love the eagle in front of the frozen waterfall, and the silhouetted eagle at sunset. Stay tuned for eagles in falling snow, fishing eagles, backlit eagles, eagle portraits—including some amazing closeups. What do you want to see? 🦅❤️

Huge shoutout to my dear friend, David “Duke” Fender, who recently accompanied six grizzled photographers on a three-day snowcoach adventure deep into the interior of Yellowstone. His first time in Yellowstone, hereinafter known as “Duke’s First Ride”—will definitely not be his last. Not surprisingly, he became an integral member of our team—our “otter spotter”—finding two elusive but photogenic otters in the mostly-frozen Yellowstone River on the first day of our trip. I can’t wait for another adventure with Duke and his new forever friends. To be honest, I’m a little concerned that they’ll invite him and I’ll be left at home..... ❤️🙏.
