Toad said, “Frog, you are looking quite green.”
“But I always look green,” said Frog. “I am a frog.”

In A Flood of Memories by Nadia Mikail @snsknene, we follow Leila as she returns to her hometown in Kuching, Sarawak, just before the flood season that will affect her home and her neighbours.

This story sheds light on the rampant flooding in a state supposedly known for its rainforests while also exploring how memories can, quite literally, drown you.

We walk alongside Leila through her tumultuous childhood, growing up with a loving but stern father who becomes a very different man when he drowns himself in the bottle. Even returning to her childhood home is enough to bring a wave of suffocation, a feeling so overwhelming that all she wants to do is escape.

Reading this reminded me what a privilege it is to have fond memories of your childhood, to have that warm, fuzzy feeling when you think of home because not everyone gets to feel that way about the place they grew up in.

I have to quote a portion of Nadia Mikail’s acknowledgment that really touched me:
🌧“To the reader: there are houses we can’t go back to and there are floods that will pull us under. You will still be standing after. And even if the world doesn’t look the way you thought it might, after, even if the world isn’t washed clean, is still grey and dirty and kind of broken – the fact that you’re standing means a new day will begin.”

September is East and Southeast Asian Heritage Month in the UK and to celebrate I've compiled a list of UK based ESEA authored book releases out (or forthcoming) this year! This is by no means comprehensive but just the ones on my radar (apologies if I've missed anyone!)

Check out @storyfeastlitfest and @esealitfest for further ESEA authors and events! @besea.n @milkteafilms and @voiceesea are also great to follow for general ESEA focused events, workshops, films and food happening this month and beyond.

It's wild to see how many books there are across multiple genres and age categories when less than ten years ago I could name one or two from UK based authors and that was it.

Which ones have you already read / are you excited about?
