Congratulations to Professor Alison Hirsch, founder of the Landscape Justice Initiative, for receiving the 2026 ASLA Professional Award in Analysis and Planning for her project “Allensworth Rising: Rural Resilience in California’s Freedom Colony”! Through years of work with local residents and community members, the Allensworth Community Plan was developed as a framework which recognizes the original community goals and aspirations as well as their continued shared goal of climate-resilient rural self-sufficiency. Looking forward, this project serves as a model for sustainable and equitable community planning in industrial agricultural regions.

Alison spoke on this project at the ASLA Conference with two colleagues from the Allensworth Progressive Association, who also received an ASLA award as the client for the Allensworth Community Plan. Their conference session touched on the history of Allensworth and how the community plan can serve as a roadmap for future climate resilience, economic diversity, water security, and a healthy future for a culturally rich community.

“For whom do we design?” That question runs through @jared_mcknight’s work, from his USC thesis on the spatial politics of homelessness in Los Angeles to more than a decade of practice at WRT across landscape architecture, urban design, planning, and architecture.

Jared is now President of ASLA’s Southern California Chapter (@socalasla) for 2026-27, representing members across eight counties. His priorities for the year focus on lowering the geographic barriers between those communities, connecting students, emerging professionals, and firm leaders, and expanding the chapter’s advocacy work.

We sat down with him after the ASLA 2026 Conference in Los Angeles to talk about leadership, access, and the mentors who shaped his path. His advice for the next generation: “Leadership begins with a willingness to show up, connect, and serve.”

What if site constraints could become design opportunities?
Slopes, proximity to wilderness, wildfire risk, intense sun, and challenging soils can all shape a landscape in meaningful ways. At @roz.land.design we look closely at every aspect of the site to create thoughtful, resilient, and sustainable solutions—working with the land, not against it. 🌿#environmentaldesign#2dlandscapedesign #autocaddrawing

What a fantastic week in Los Angeles! OLIN made a fine showing at ASLA National, and had a fine time (re)connecting with so many of you! How great to come together with colleagues and friends across the profession—it is together that we continue to chart the course of landscape architecture. What an awesome charge.

Of course, this year’s conference was an extra special gathering for OLIN as we celebrate 50 years as a purpose-driven studio. At the heart of the week was our celebratory happy hour which featured words of wisdom of Partners Susan Weiler and Lucinda Sanders to inspire the collected OLINites past and present.

And yes, OLIN was ALL IN for #ASLA2026! We participated in Education Sessions throughout the week, including ‘Equity by Design’ with Sarah Swanseen, ‘Grounding the Grid’ with Richard Roark, ‘Evolving Iconic Landscapes’ with Tiffany Beamer, and ‘Can We Restore “Real” Rivers in Cities’ with Jessica Henson. Henson then outdid herself by joining the special topics panel, ‘Bridging Academia and Practice’ and co-leading the Field Session, ‘Tracing the LA River: Sepulveda Basin.’ Our LA office pulled out all the stops with Sarah joining Joanna Karaman to co-Chair the ASLA SoCal Chapter Host Booth, welcoming attendees and orienting them to the conference, local designed landscapes, and regional ecosystems!

It goes without saying that OLIN thoroughly enjoyed all that ASLA week had to offer, including some serious networking, various reunions, and leadership meetings, as well as local sightseeing (hi LACMA!) and dining (tacos and pupusas!). And let’s not forget the Professional & Student Awards ceremony (congrats to our very own Annika Schon!) plus the LAF Benefit dinner (where we got a full table near the action) and gala (the desserts were divine). Whew!

Next year is just around the corner. We’ll see you all then, but don’t be strangers in the meantime. Let’s keep the conversations going!

Species Spotlight: Ficus rubiginosa 🌿

A broad, layered canopy and a trunk with character, the kind of centerpiece you design around.

Architects and designers, DM for specs. Public visits at our Anaheim farm.
