Last year, New Year’s Walk 2023, started hours late. I had roped myself into taking care of this 82 lb six month old, wild, untrained, hot mess puppy. Being the equivalent of an entire human, she had kept me up all night, zero fucks.

when I finally woke up, I was four hours late for my own annual hike - normally complete by the time we had not even started.
To add insult to injury, it was pouring. Hailing. Shitty outside.

I was tired… annoyed. Pissed at myself and at … it.
I knew my tenacity - aka stubbornness/pride - would win. I WILL NOT ABANDON MYSELF ANYMORE. My secret target during tough times has been to focus on the hike. So, I had to face the weather, lateness, dog, the best-intentions-got-me-here. I didn’t even know why I was going anymore in that moment. TBH.

Of course, rainbows - literally - came out at the end of said hike from hell - and tough lessons rained down my wide open, blathering pie hole all year, right on time, in this great sidereal shitshow we are in together.
In 2023 the lessons were tough enough for me to begin - ever so slowly - to allow…to let go.

If you’re reading this now, I am again hours late, right on time. I’ve just reached the top 2024, and put my phone away.

I’ve done this walk for nearly 30 years. It used to be just me.

This year, there are hundreds and hundreds of people (thank you and F you, google maps).

The one thing I’ve ALWAYS done, is to be the first to smile and say hello, happy new year to each and every person who walks by. It used to be a few souls. There are hundreds of people now. I’m wiped… but, no secret; I needed it, too.

My own teacher taught me - a thankless task - to put away more than I took out.

I’ve spent a long time mulling over what I’ve learned - and from whom and how to best share it , so you can learn, too. I stand on the shoulders of giants: almost nothing is original material.

Thank you for your patience, tolerance, especially your forgiveness.

God may be slow…but…
she’s never late. :D
