A little over two years ago, Lucia called me to tell me she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Almost in the same breath, she told me about all of the art she wanted to create in this time: short films, documentaries, art collectives, charity projects, and the list goes on. She asked me and @alycialycialycialycia to help document part of her process, including filming her head being shaved. Soon after that, she sent me the first draft of Headscarf, a short film about a woman navigating her sexuality and desires all while the middle of chemotherapy. With a group of friends on a sunny March day, Lucia directed this beautiful film on 16 mm. Fast forward and film has already screened at San Sebastian film festival, Spain (where it won 2nd place!!), Women X, UK, and finally we get to announce it’s going to Austin Film festival, US! Two years ago, we were on set shooting @scenehousefilm and somehow we never got around to posting these BTS photos by @sofi.kunz Maybe I didn’t post them because they were so special to me that I wanted to keep them to myself. Or maybe I didn’t want those days to feel like they were “in the past.” But the truth is, every film has a lifecycle. There were six months of meetings, planning, and fighting for it before these pictures were taken and there have been another two years of work since. The work doesn’t end, even when it might look like it’s over. And honestly, I hope I get to keep doing it forever. ✨
