The exhibition „OPACITY AND LIGHT“ explores the dynamic interplay between Opacity and Light - between what reveals itself and what remains partially concealed. Through painting, sculpture, installation, and spatial interventions, the exhibition approaches both light and opacity as aesthetic materials and as philosophical conditions shaping perception, relation and coexistence.

The exhibition builds on the concept of opacity articulated by poet, novelist, and philosopher Édouard Glissant (1928–2011) – the right not to be fully understood - and places it in dialogue with light as a metaphor for revelation, knowledge and clarity – yet also for exposure, classification and control.

📍A exposição coletiva de pintura, fotografia, vídeo e som denominada “Breve passagem por um inventário infinito” é a próxima mostra artística em exibição, de 28 de março a 23 de maio de 2026, na Galeria Municipal Jovem, instalada no Palácio da Quinta Municipal da Piedade, na Póvoa de Santa Iria.

👨‍🎨A “Breve passagem por um inventário infinito” é uma exposição coletiva dos jovens artistas emergentes Jaime González Palencia, Madalena Bettencourt, Maria Madalena e Sofia Seidi.

O dia da inauguração contará com um workshop de desenho, designado “Em Louvor das Formas Indefinidas”.

T H A N K Y O U

Last two weeks to visit our JAHRESGABEN exhibition and support all participating artists as well as the future program of THE SPACE //.

We are very happy and deeply grateful to announce that, thanks to the Jahresgaben exhibition and our fundraising efforts, we have secured a total of seven months of funding so far. We will continue the fundraiser until we are able to secure funding for the entire year.

We will resume our regular exhibition program at the end of March, and in early June we will continue with a new exhibition as part of the Phototriennale.

A heartfelt thank you for the incredible support — to all participating artists, the many visitors, and for the inspiring exchanges and conversations.

The JAHRESGABEN exhibition remains open until February 28, and works can still be acquired. In addition, a GoFundMe and PayPal page have been set up for those who wish to support the project directly. https://gofund.me/d61437ad8

The Finissage will take place on
Saturday, February 28, from 18h00 - 20h00.
THE SPACE // will already be open from 12 pm on that day.

Background Information:

Following the discontinuation of the Frei_Fläche funding program at the end of 2025, no suitable follow-up funding program could be secured for THE SPACE // for 2026. One of the main reasons is that, as a new and unconventional format, the project does not easily fit into the funding logic and regulations of many existing grant programs and foundations.

However, we remain in dialogue with the city and various foundations to find sustainable solutions.

For this reason, we took the initiative in mid-December. We cancelled the first planned exhibition of 2026 in order to organize a fundraiser and curated a JAHRESGABEN exhibition designed to support both the participating artists and THE SPACE //.

THE SPACE // was conceived as an independent cultural initiative and exhibition space. All resources that flow into the project remain within the project. This reflects our non-profit ethos, our primary commitment to supporting artists, and our focus on cultural exchange.

INFORMALITY AS RESISTANCE brought together bold performances, thought-provoking installations, and powerful interventions developed during the PLAY(THE)GROUND 2024 residency.
