Sofía makes objects that refuse to behave.

A chair should support you.
A ring should decorate you.
Architecture should organize space.

Sofía looks at those rules and asks:

Why?

Born in Guadalajara and working from Mexico City, she moves between art, architecture, furniture and jewelry as if those categories were never supposed to exist in the first place.

Her chairs wobble, bend and challenge the body.
Her jewelry becomes sculpture at miniature scale.
Her installations turn space into something to navigate rather than simply look at.

And everything feels slightly unruly.

That’s what makes the work so good.

There is humor in it. Seduction. Color. Imperfection. But underneath all that play is a serious proposition:

What if design didn’t tell us how to behave?

What if a chair didn’t dictate how to sit?

What if an object wasn’t finished until somebody touched it, wore it, sat on it, moved through it or negotiated with it?

Sofía isn’t really designing objects.

She’s designing encounters.

And perhaps that is why the work feels so alive: it doesn’t ask us to stand back and admire it.

It asks us to participate.

Meet Sofía Elías.

Now we want to know:

Would you sit in the chair or would you be afraid to?

🟡Now available at The Shop #atTheBass! Sofía Elias (@sofiahhellyes) is a Mexican multidisciplinary artist, designer and architect whose practice explores a playful universe informed by art, architecture and children’s playscapes.
