Mother-daughter duo Sandra Hisakuni & Sofia Hisakuni have written and illustrated ‘The Northland Beckons: An Illustrated Haiku Journey’, and are coming to help even the youngest aspiring poets start their own haiku journeys! Saturday, April 11th at 10:30 AM! Join us for a lovely celebration of nature and how we capture its beauty through poems, and try your hand at a poem, too! It’s as easy as 5 7 5! (Sorry. Bad haiku joke. We’ll see ourselves out.)

I look back on Sofia + John’s wedding with great fondness. Their calm and easy-going energy made making photos with them so fun and inspiring. The love and care they put into the details of their celebration was palpable. Sofia wore her grandmother’s wedding dress and designed the beautiful tablescapes for their dinner. And despite caring deeply about the details of their day, when a rainstorm threatened to change the location of their ceremony (the location that they had planned envisioned the ceremony happening at for months) they never appeared stressed or upset. They just rolled with what came at them. In the end, although cut a bit short due to the aforementioned rainstorm, they got through most of their ceremony exactly where they had imagined it happening. 🌙 Meet author Sandra Hisakuni and illustrator Sofia Hisakuni, Silver Medalists in the 2024 Moonbeam Children’s Book Awards for The Northland Beckons: An Illustrated Haiku Journey! 🥈 This mother-daughter duo's poetic celebration of the Northwoods earned recognition in the Children’s Poetry category; a moment Sandra describes as “a huge affirmation that our work is beautiful and impactful.” Winning their first Moonbeam Award has inspired them to keep going: “The award has given us the courage to continue in our work, and we're already working on book two!” Since receiving the honor, they’ve proudly featured their award-winning status in their press kit, website, and bookstore promotions, and added those shiny Moonbeam seals to each cover. Congratulations, Sandra and Sofia, on this well-deserved recognition! We can’t wait to dive into your next book.
