🌊 What changes about Korean history when we tell it from its margins along the shore, the mountainside, the base?

Day two of 𝓐𝓼 𝓞𝓬𝓮𝓪𝓷 𝓟𝓮𝓸𝓹𝓵𝓮 brings us The Sea, the Mountain, the Camp: Remapping Korea’s Native Terrain. This conversation, featuring Madeleine Han, Sohl Lee (@sohl.l), and Sung Hwan Kim (@sunghwankim.archive), and moderated by Tony Cho (@slowfutureslaboratory), offers alternative ways to think about notable moments in Korean history and points us to the underlying assumptions that shape our understanding of Korea. Rather than taking well-trodden stories of colonization, national liberation, occupation, and war on their face, these presentations consider these temporal categories as having not only a periodizing effect but also spatial and material consequences for the making of race and gender, sovereignty and labor, ecology and the built environment.

Join us next weekend at REDCAT (@calartsredcat) for this conversation and more, as artists, scholars, and cultural workers come together to consider the histories and ongoing impacts of militarism across the Pacific.

📅 Saturday, 10/24, 1–6pm and Sunday, 10/25, 1–5pm
📍 REDCAT, 631 W 2nd St
🎟️ Free; RSVP at the link in bio.

As Ocean People is organized by GYOPO and made possible with lead support from the Terra Foundation for American Art (@terraamericanart) and Yang Won Sun Foundation (@ywsfoundation).

This October we’re bringing together artists and scholars across for As Ocean People, a symposium exploring the legacies of U.S. militarization and war, Indigenous resistance, and environmentalism across and around the Pacific. These themes are closely tied to our exhibition Flesh Witness, which will be on view at the REDCAT (@calartsredcat) gallery.

Organized by GYOPO (@gyopo.us) and taking place at REDCAT, the weekend will feature panel discussions, screenings, soundscapes, and performances — with the intention of providing a generative space for the sharing of ideas, worldviews, practices, and histories.

📅 Saturday, 10/24 from 1—6pm and Sunday, 10/25 from 1—5pm

We participated in the final kelp harvest season of @seaweed_city removing dried kelp, cleaning grow lines, and preparing containers for the next season.

Seaweed City has been dedicated to kelp cultivation, harvesting, and water bioremediation at @governorsisland for over 5 years. Through giant seaweed farms, they work to restore marine ecosystems, absorb carbon, and protect coastlines.

We are happy to collaborate with initiatives like this that transform the relationship between the city and the ocean. In times of climate crisis, kelp cultivation is an act of care for our future.

Many thanks to @shan.mahmud @lukeeddins and the entire @seaweed_city team for making us part of this necessary and relevant work. And thanks to the collective energy of the enthusiasts and people from different disciplines who also participated.

Thanks everyone for showing up at the Tea Talk Tuesdays on June 3, and let me share "Citrus at Sea" and stories of art and cultural connections through seaweed. Thanks to Judiann, Sarah, and Brian @foodlabsh Stony Brook Southampton (I look forward to future collaborations), @kelly.dennis.esq for trying sprinkles of ulva (파래) from the South Shore on the pie--and always @jeremynative for fun photos. Citrus at Sea 🍋🌊

Kelp Graham Cracker Crust

1½ cups graham cracker crumbs (about 12 sheets)
⅓ cup sugar
6 Tbsp melted butter
¼ cup finely ground Korean dasima (kombu)

Mix ingredients, press into a pie dish, and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 8–10 minutes. Let cool.

Lemon Filling

½ cup fresh lemon juice
1 can sweetened condensed milk
Pinch of salt

Whisk until smooth and pour into the cooled crust. Chill until set (about 2–3 hours).

Top with whipped cream before serving. Lemon jest and dasima powder (or any seaweed powder for extra topping)

A pie inspired by seaweed cultures across Korea, Hawaiʻi, Brittany, and Long Island—where the ocean meets citrus.

Join author Sohl Lee at Midnight Books for a special presentation on her recent publication The Minjung Art Movement: Decolonization and Democracy in South Korea.

In the 1970s and 1980s, a striking form of activist art emerged in South Korea during the mass pro-democracy struggles that culminated in the establishment of direct presidential elections in 1987. Known as the minjung (people’s) art movement (minjung misul undong), this multifaceted cultural activism defined the visual language of dissent under conditions shaped by authoritarian rule and the global Cold War. Drawing on Sohl Lee’s recent book—the first comprehensive art historical study devoted to the artists and collectives of the movement—this talk argues that minjung art articulated what Lee calls the conjoined aspirations of decolonization and democracy. Hundreds of artists mobilized printmaking, murals, performance, and image circulation to build what she describe as movement publics, reimagining sovereignty not as a constitutional endpoint but as an ongoing collective practice.

We are grateful for the support of our community partners, Women Cross DMZ, Korea Peace Now! Grassroots Network, and Nodutdol.

Yesterday, we had an Artist talk at FIT’s Art and Design Gallery. It was a great time meeting the Ma’s House Alumni artists and the FIT patrons.

Now open for viewing Adorned Futures: Fabric, Form, and Indigenous Resistance

This collaborative, cross-disciplinary exhibition brings together resident artists from Ma’s House, Indigenous artisans from the Shinnecock Indian Nation, and students and faculty from the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT). The exhibition explores textile, fiber, and wearable art as powerful sites of cultural resilience, Indigenous futurism, and environmental storytelling.

You have until March 29th to check out this museum quality exhibition curated by @jeremynative @mashousestudio @fit_artdesigngallery

Kudos to the installation team. Wow 🙏🏽🙏🏽
