When I was a kid, riding a bike was the first sense of freedom I ever had. I never thought of it as exercise, it was escape.
Forty+ years later, it still is. There’s a calm I experience with the cadence of pedaling.
But this stretch of the calendar is why I love it as a sport. Leadville 100 is days away (Allez @skin.quimmons), the Vuelta is around the corner, and then the world championships are in Montreal. First time they’ve been in North America in over a decade.
Watching what the pros can do on a bicycle never stops leaving me in awe.
If you’ve never watched a bicycle race, this is the year to start.

I turned 50 a couple weeks ago.
Today I celebrate the miracle of life, of joy, of pleasure, of now.

I accept that there are things about myself that are not ideal, and that I will never be able to change them. I have found a path to manage these aspects of myself.

When I was much younger, I went to bed one night, morbidly obese, addicted to drugs, resigned to an imminent death. There was no future worth living for. I couldn’t see the miracle to celebrate.

The only real and lasting change I’ve made, is in tying to find something about discomfort to enjoy. I have been successful in this pursuit.

Oddly, the more I lean into the discomfort of the present, the more comfortable I become overall.

If you’ve made it to 50, I congratulate you. If not, I invite you to make it a goal, it’s quite wonderful.
