We want to be helpful when people we love are suffering, but why is it so hard to say the right thing? You don’t have to say the right thing, BUT here are some things we know are not so helpful to say to a friend who has just lost a pregnancy: “Everything happens for a reason” 🚫 “It was God’s plan” 🚫 “You can always have another baby” 🚫 And some things that can be helpful: “I’m thinking about you and your baby”✔️ “Do you want to tell me about (insert baby’s name if possible)?”✔️ “I’m going to bring over dinner tomorrow. It’s my tenth year learning and volunteering with this org and I love it so much! The feeling of “coming home” is always the feeling I get at the @postpartumsupportinternational conference because everyone is united by the goal of lifting up parents in all the ways each of us can contribute—doulas, lactation consultants, nurses, doctors, lawyers, therapists, peer support providers, researchers, and mental health advocates—like different body parts working together as one. My colleagues who presented were amazing! I appreciated the focus on trauma this year! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼@desertbloomwellness @doctorlipari @therapist.mom.collective @angelicaquezadalcsw @sol_materna @blackgirlsmh 📖 I brought something a little different this year—a thriller novel featuring perinatal mental health— and it sold out at the bookstore!! My fellow writer friends and I got to share our books at the Author Meet & Greet on Saturday night. The most fun interaction was meeting a Professor of Social Work who said she wants to use my novel in her course next semester to teach her students about perinatal mental health. Bibliotherapy ftw! 💪🏽📖 @bethanywarrenlcsw @dr.jessicavernon @pecindman @drdansingley @momandmind So many great memories with my #nevada #losangeles and #sandiego colleagues, and new friends along the way! The 39th Annual PSI Conference in LA was a time to connect, and learn from others who are passionately doing the work to support perinatal mental health. Coming together with so many other providers, organizations, supporters, my fellow @psi_ga Board Member, and the @psiallianceforpoc and @postpartumsupportinternational staff truly blows me a way. I got the chance to meet so many people in “real life” this year. However, the highlight of the conference was getting the chance to see my dear friend Tyleshia with @trendingjoy_pllc share her work on Growing Through Grief. There are seasons that show us different levels of ourselves and to hear her share her work and know the depth behind her story left me in awe. So proud of you Ty ♥️ Leaving LA with a grateful heart to do this work with such amazing people.

We recently partnered with the Urban Perinatal Education Center (@urbanperinatalri) in Rhode Island for our second in-person training together focused on Black maternal mental health and adolescent perinatal mental health. Led by Dr. Solimar Santiago-Warner (@sol_materna), Birth Trauma & Loss Therapist, educator, and member of @selenidotorg’s Clinical Advisory Board, the training: 💙 Reminded us that the body carries what people live through: stress, trauma, grief, racism, inequity, survival, and resilience. 💙 Invited us to reflect on the wisdom and responsibility many young parents carry as they navigate family, community, and systems of care. Grateful for the opportunity to deliver closing remarks at the Brooklyn College 2026 Perinatal Mental Health Summit. As I said: Let this not be the end of a conference. Let this be a continuation of a commitment. A commitment to center mental health as essential to maternal health. A commitment to confront inequities with intention and accountability. A commitment to reimagine care across the entire perinatal continuum.
