The spatial installation by STUDIO8 ARCHITECTS at Porta Nuova, @caselli11_12 during Milan design week 2026 The installation takes the Chinese tower as its archetype — built entirely through mortise-and-tenon joinery, no screws, no glue, fully reversible. Stackable benches and stools form a modular system that functions independently or assembles into a sculptural tower form. The silhouette carries a deliberate visual echo of Chinese character structure: weight distributed, balance negotiated, meaning built from parts. Light inside the pieces is diffuse, even, without a focal point — a different logic from Western directional light. Here, light doesn’t guide you somewhere. It simply stays. It becomes a medium for slowing down, for noticing where you are. The site matters. Porta Nuova’s neoclassical stone — heavy, vertical, permanent — creates a quiet tension with the timber: lighter, horizontal, designed to be taken apart. Not a confrontation. A conversation. The symmetry of the square has been deliberately broken. There is no obvious path through. You have to move slowly, find your own way around it. @studio8.architects × JIFANG Milan Design Week 2026. Our installation at Porta Nuova — none of it would exist without the people and partners who built it with us, literally. At the core of this project is a question we find ourselves returning to constantly: what does Chinese material culture look like when it stops explaining itself and simply works? The answer, here, takes the form of mortise-and-tenon joinery — one of the oldest structural logics in Chinese craft — translated into a contemporary modular system. Stacked timber benches rising from concrete bases. Components designed to be disassembled, reconfigured, reused. Nothing decorative. Everything intentional. Our partner in making this real was JIFANG (几方) — a wood craftsmanship and manufacturing brand whose technical precision and deep understanding of material behavior matched our ambitions every step of the way. Working with them wasn’t a transaction. It was a genuine back-and-forth between people who care about how things are made, not just how they look. What this collaboration means to us goes beyond the project itself. It’s proof that Chinese design and manufacturing can travel — not by adapting to an international audience, but by being fully, confidently itself. From Shanghai to Milan, Together | STUDIO8 ARCHITECTS × JIFANG During Milan Design Week 2026, the installation presented by STUDIO8 ARCHITECTS (八荒) at Porta Nuova was successfully realized and exhibited to an international audience. We would like to take this moment to extend our sincere gratitude to our core creative partner on this project — JIFANG (几方), the wood craftsmanship and manufacturing brand that made it all possible. Together, STUDIO8 and JIFANG brought the ancient logic of Chinese joinery — mortise-and-tenon construction — into dialogue with a contemporary modular system. From the stacked timber benches rising from concrete bases to the multi-functional wood components designed for disassembly and reconfiguration, every detail reflects a deep understanding of material behavior and Eastern aesthetics. JIFANG's exceptional craftsmanship and technical expertise were the foundation this work was built on. This collaboration is more than a convergence of two design practices — it speaks to the growing capacity of Chinese design and manufacturing brands to operate with confidence and coherence on the global stage. 2026 MDW | STUDIO8 presents new installation. This Milan Design Week, STUDIO8 brings a new spatial installation to Porta Nuova — where Eastern philosophy meets Western classical architecture. Faced with the weight and permanence of neoclassical stone, the team responds with quiet restraint: wood and light, inspired by the imagery of a traditional Eastern lantern, flowing gently between the columns like water through cracks — softening rigid order, stretching the visitor’s sense of time. A dialogue between fullness and negative space. Between permanence and impermanence. On Thursday, Relik launched its first collection, Domestic Spirits, featuring five sculptural candles. Each one corresponds to a moment of the day, a season, an archetype, and a distinct atmosphere. The exhibition design amplifies the candles’ silhouettes, playing with their shadows through a careful study of lighting to enhance their spiritual presence.
