Every project is an evolution of ideas, conversations and reflections.
It takes time...
Time getting to know my clients, teasing out their likes and dislikes when they may not be able to articulate them easily. Understanding what they need and building trust.
It takes human interaction.
An AI generated image doesn't understand the true context of property, how the light falls on a favourite spot, or how my clients really want to feel in their home. It sounds cliché but it really is a process and very much a human one.

One of our latest projects is a 1930's detatched house in Hampstead. It has been altered many times in its lifetime, and while my client knew it had a good spacial feel, he also felt it was off somehow. Out of proportion Victorian details patched in badly, blue LED strip lighting in the cornices (nightclub anyone?!) and high gloss Italian style tiles everywhere, it just didn't feel right.

Together we are looking to pare those alterations back, restoring some of the original detailing and improving the interior architecture. Allowing the original character of the house to sing as well as working well for my client and his daughters.

Here are some shots of the evolving palette of colours and materials we've been gathering for those initial conversations.

Looking forward to sharing the evolution of this one.

Joinery, designed in-studio alongside Christian Paul Design, rises floor to ceiling in rough-sawn oak, its full-height storage reading more as architecture than furniture. Brushed brass details punctuate throughout, lending weight and warmth in equal measure. The result is considered, tactile, a rhythm that carries from room to room. Joinery fabricated by Rozen Furniture, timber supplied by Solid Floor.

The importance of making an entrance.

The entrance hall of a home provides transition and pause between the outside world and your personal space. It sets the tone and establishes the mood, providing a visual preview of the rest of the house.

The previous entrance to this garden flat was located beneath the undercroft of the the portico for the main house. A priority for the client was that the new home have an entry that was impressive, providing a sense of arrival, and the damp, dark undercroft was hardly a suitable vestibule. We enclosed the undercroft area, and moved the front door so that it over looks the Portland stone entrance courtyard, providing a sense of presence and clarity, and creating a passage from the front courtyard to the rear patio. The new front doors have large glass panels, bringing light into the new lobby.

Traffic is a consideration in this area, and the floor needed to be practical while remaining in keeping with the style of the house. A black and white checkerboard heritage tumbled limestone was selected, which works beautifully in contrast to the oak timber flooring throughout. The the walls are lined with elegant wall panelling to lend the space character.

This new foyer provides a separate zone between the exterior and the dwelling space, preparing the ground for the rest of the house.

Rear hallway at South Downs cottage that connects the boot room, utility, kitchen and snug together.

Introducing glazed timber doors allowed the light to flood in whilst also better connecting the inside with the beautiful garden outside, which was designed by @bbrooks.gardendesigner along with our client @thebulbshed

A favourite piece of art has found its perfect spot too.

With its generous high ceiling and bay window, this sitting room offers a comfortable, welcoming space to sit and relax or entertain at any time of day.

The sofas and armchairs were all sourced from @georgesmithfurniture, and the ottoman from @puckhaberdecor made in a bespoke size. The amazing cupboard from @matthewcoxetc was almost made for the space. And of course, our friends at @solidfloor installed the characterful timber flooring.

We hope you love this room as much as we do!

Restoration of details

When restoring period properties, details count, most crucially in the joinery. From the original timber sash windows, to the wall panelling, skirting boards and cornices, each play a role in creating the character and integrity of an historic home.

The priory in our recently completed refurbishment of a Grade ll listed property in Maida Vale, was on custom crafted detailing. Creating new life in an old building, through the preservation and recreation of its historical essence.
