Doppelgänger

Few animals have taken camouflage to the extreme quite like the pygmy seahorse.

At barely 1 or 2 centimeters (less than 1 inch) long, the Hippocampus bargibanti spends its entire life among the branches of massive gorgonian sea fans, where its anatomy seems almost designed to disappear.

Its coloration mirrors the living tissue of its host, while the tiny tubercles covering its body mimic the texture and polyps of the gorgonian itself. Even its remarkably short, rounded snout resembles the individual polyps of the sea fan.

These incredible animals were discovered by accident on 1969, after scientists brought some of the gorgonian coral back to examine it at their lab, and found some of these attached to it.

Other species of Pygmy Seahorse have only been discovered in the past two decades, making one wonder what we have yet to discover under the surface.

We might live on the same planet, but it sometime seems as if many of these creatures live on another universe!

Meet the Yaki: The Guardian of Tangkoko Forest! 🐒🖤

Did you know that North Sulawesi is home to one of the world’s most unique primates? Meet the Yaki (Macaca nigra), or the Celebes crested macaque!
Mainly found in the Tangkoko Nature Reserve, Bitung, these smart, fruit-eating monkeys play a crucial role as “farmers of the forest” by dispersing seeds to keep the jungle alive. 🌳

This photo was taken a few days ago when we visited Tangkoko Park.

BEFORE YOU PRESS THE SHUTTER, PAUSE.

The moment begins before you lift the camera. Stay back, settle and watch. Notice repeated behaviour and any changes your presence might cause. Even while your buddy has a turn, you can anticipate where a natural moment might unfold.

P - Pause: take in the whole scene.
A - Assess: check your buoyancy, position, buddy, air and time.
U - Understand: read the subject's natural rhythm.
S - Set: choose your frame, then wait.
E - Ease away: leave the subject space and know when to move on.

PAUSE does not mean missing a fleeting moment. A burst can be deliberate when behaviour calls for it; it should not replace watching and choosing. Talk with your buddy about what each of you hopes to photograph, keep an eye on your shared dive plan and let the subject decide what happens. Never move or prompt an animal to force the image you imagined. If a moment does not happen, there is always another dive and something new to discover.
