The roots don’t lie 🤎

LECA stands for lightweight expanded clay aggregate and he’s right, it IS a great soil amendment.

But if you’ve followed me and other aroid growers for a while, you know many of us LOVE growing plants “semi-hydro” in just LECA.

As a standalone substrate, LECA does an excellent job of storing and delivering consistent moisture and nutrients to roots. It also has excellent structure for airflow, doesn’t break down over time and is reusable.

There are two important rules for growing plants in LECA:
1. Consistently add quality hydroponic-compatible nutrients. LECA is inorganic and doesn’t offer any nutrients on its own.
2. Always keep the LECA hydrated via wick and/or reservoir. If LECA dries out it can actually adhere to and withdraw moisture from the roots.

I use SOL Soils LECA, which is 10% off with my code CUTEROOTS. Link in bio. Xx

Welcome to the very first Showcase Sunday here at Wanderlust Flora Plant Studio — and I couldn’t think of a better plant to kick things off. 🎉

Everyone, meet Sandie. 🩷

Sandie is my Alocasia Pseudo Sanderiana Pink, and she has been one of my absolute favorites since the moment I brought her home. I found her back in March — as a tiny baby plant — through an auction on @palmstreetapp at @mysecretplantshop. You know the ones. The hidden gems you don’t tell everybody about. 🤫

She came home as a baby and she has absolutely thrived. And here’s the thing about Sandie — she is not just a plant to me. Every single morning I sit down at my outdoor desk to start my day, Sandie is right there. She greets me. Every. Morning. I’m not even being dramatic — there is something about starting your day surrounded by the plants you love that just hits different. ☀️

Sandie has made it very clear she is a Florida girl at heart. She LOVES the afternoon sun and she is absolutely soaking up this Florida humidity like it was made for her. She’s been living her best life outside on my desk, and honestly? I respect it.

Now when the temps start to drop this winter... let’s just say Sandie winters in the greenhouse cabinet. 👑 She deserves nothing less.

Drop a 🩷 if you love an Alocasia with personality!

🌱 Substrate Saturday — and today I want to get real with you. 🌿

Like any plant collector, I think we evolve. We learn to tune out all the noise and start listening to ourselves and our plants. Because you are capable. More than you think.

It is SO easy to get lost following every plant enthusiast you admire. And yes, they grow beautiful plants. But remember — they didn’t just get there. It took hard work, dedication, research, and they too started at the beginning, probably not knowing much about substrate either.

For me, my daughter turned me on to chunky soil and creating our own mix when we started this plant journey together during the pandemic. 🥹 That’s where it all began.

And what I’ve learned since then is this 👇

There is no one right way.

✅ Make your own mix
✅ Buy a chunky soil
✅ Use moss, perlite, leca, stratum — whatever works for YOU
✅ Change your mind whenever you want
✅ Experiment freely — you don’t need anyone’s permission

What matters most is knowing yourself as a grower. Are you a hoverer? Relaxed? Do you tend to overwater? Because the answer to those questions matters just as much as what kind of plant you’re growing when it comes to picking a substrate.

Back in May I bought at least a bag of most of the popular brands and just tried them. Liked some. Didn’t love others. Watched how my plants responded. That’s it. That’s the whole process. 🌿

For me, my plants thrive in @forbiddencereal, @solsoil, and Lezea Pon. My tissue cultures start in stratum and perlite, and once they’re climatized and hitting 5–6 inches, they’re ready for their first repot. Sometimes I just grab whatever’s closest — Forbidden Cereal, Sol Soil, or Luzu’s Palm — I keep them all in bins so I can get to them fast and start potting. Easy. ✅

And I do NOT immediately repot a plant when I bring it home — even though my goal is always eventually to get it out of straight soil.

Trust the process. Listen to your plants. And stop waiting for permission to try something new. 🌿💪

What’s your go-to substrate? Drop it below! 👇

💧🌿 Happy Thirsty Thursday! And today I’m not just thirsty for water — I’m thirsty for plants I absolutely cannot have. Yet. 😂

As my collection has grown, my wish list has gotten… well… a little out of control. See, the problem with leveling up your collection is that the plants you start dreaming about get rarer. And when they get rarer, they get PRICIER. And when they get pricier… you just stare at them on the internet like 👁️👄👁️

But you know what they say — dream big. 🌿✨

And speaking of dream plants — one of my absolute favorite nurseries to work with directly is @dandiplants. If you haven’t checked them out yet, what are you even doing?! They are incredible and always have something special. dandiplants.com 🌿

Now let me introduce you to my current wish list situation 👇

🌿 Alocasia De Beers Blue Pink Variegated
$320 – $950
Look at her. Just LOOK at her. That blue-green with pink variegation?? Absolutely unhinged. I need her.

🌿 Alocasia Longiloba Black Saturn Albo/Pink
$1,100 – $5,000
Yes. You read that right. And I completely understand why. This is one of the most breathtaking Alocasias I have ever seen in my life and I am not even a little ashamed that she’s on this list. 👏
👉 She’s available right now at @rareplantfairy — rareplantfairy.com (link in bio!)

🌿 Alocasia Comet Pink Variegated
$2,800+
The pink variegation on this one is chef’s kiss. She is a COMET and she is out of my orbit financially but not emotionally. 💕

Total wish list damage: somewhere between “please don’t tell my husband” and “I may need a second job.” 😂😂😂

But before I get too carried away dreaming — I have to stop and be grateful. My previous wish list plant, the Alocasia Pink Venom, was planted from a tissue culture and she is absolutely THRIVING. 🥹🌿 And y’all… she is unfurling a new leaf any day now. Dreams do come true in this hobby, one tissue culture at a time. 🙌

They say dream big — and in this hobby, we dream IN RARE PLANTS. 🌿👑

Drop a 🌿 if you have a wish list that’s gotten completely out of hand too — I know I’m not alone in this!

My poor Silver Satin Pothos has seen better days! 🥹😩

Instead of giving up, I decided it was time for a little chop and prop session! I’m taking some cuttings and hoping to give this sad plant a fresh start.

What was left of the mother plant went into @solsoils houseplant chunky mix + repot recovery and the cuttings went into a fluval stratum/perlite mix.

Fingers crossed I can turn her back into a beautiful, full plant again!

My @solsoils COUPON CODE is CLUELESS for a discount!
Fluval and stratum are in my Amazon storefront linked in my bio. If you need links to anything let me know.

🤍❄️🌿 Bold patterns. Blizzard markings. Absolutely breathtaking. Alocasia Odora
‘Batik Blizzard.’ ✨🌿🤍

The Alocasia Odora is already a commanding plant — large, upright, with those enormous, sculptural leaves that fill a room with genuine tropical presence. The ‘Batik Blizzard’ cultivar takes that already impressive species and adds something extraordinary: bold, irregular white-to-cream markings across the deep green leaf surface that genuinely evoke the look of batik fabric — that ancient wax-resist dyeing technique where patterns bloom across a surface in unpredictable, organic ways.

Purchased Tissue Culture: @dandi_plants

Substrate: @hydragarden or @solsoils

Nutrients added: @gt_growth_technology_au Clonex or Rootzone until they mature then switch over to Focus Foliage

Lights: @barrina_us

Humidifier: @goveelife

Pest Control: @dmvbeneficials

Care Tips:

☀️ Light: Bright indirect light is essential — those white blizzard sections perform no photosynthesis and depend entirely on the green tissue to power the whole plant. More light = more vigorous growth and the most luminous white markings.
💧 Water: Allow the top 1–2 inches of soil to dry between waterings. Alocasias like consistent moisture but are very susceptible to root rot in waterlogged conditions.
🌱 Soil: Chunky, well-draining aroid mix — orchid bark, perlite, and quality potting mix.
💦 Humidity: 70–85%. High humidity produces the most spectacular, lush leaf development.
🌡️ Temperature: 65–85°F. Stable warmth, no cold drafts or temperature swings.
🌿 Fertilize: Monthly with balanced fertilizer during the growing season.
💤 Dormancy: May slow or rest in cooler months — reduce watering and wait for the growing season to resume.
⚠️ Toxicity: Toxic to pets and children if ingested.
Large. Patterned. Blizzard-marked and breathtaking. The Alocasia Odora Batik Blizzard is large-scale variegated drama at its absolute finest.🤍

Sometimes your plant babies will start asking for help and being able to see the changes makes all the difference. My Philodendron Red Moon 🌙 went from dramatic fat leaves to smaller and narrower green leaves. Having moved, the lighting wasn’t the same and by the time I realized it it had been months of consistent smaller green leaves. BUT a much needed repotting and some new soil from @solsoils made for a happier philodendron and I was rewarded with a wine colored leaf emerging much larger than her predecessors. Can’t wait to see the new version of this beauty now that she’s in a happier place. 🪴 #plantnerd305 #philodendronredmoon #aroidaddicts #repotting ❤️
