This was a quiet, unsettling read that I understood and felt on a deep level. The vast emptiness, isolation, and idea of being the last person alive in the world were powerful and well done. The pacing was calm and intentional, and enticing. I appreciated the significance of the story and what it was trying to say, but it also felt like the book simply ended. There was nothing. Everything simply faded away, which I think is kind of the point. “The Child” is alone in a world with nothing else and no one else, but time. Every day is empty. Every day is nothing. So why should the ending be anything else? This book made me think about and appreciate humanity and relationships… but I’m left feeling a little empty. Let down. Sad. Wondering. And again—I wonder if that’s exactly what the book intended. Fast forward a month later : I am still thinking about this book. It has had a profound effect on me. It doesn’t grip you right away when you finish, but it stays with you. It makes you see things from an entirely different perspective. It humbles you. It makes you appreciate what you have. This book will be with me for quite some time.
