Over time, I’ve been grateful to build a meaningful community relationship with the shop. On a personal note, Olveritas Village is also one of my favorite places to shop for cultural attire and decorative items, especially during the Día de los Muertos season. If you’re visiting Olvera Street, I encourage you to stop by Olveritas Village at W-24 Olvera Street in Los Angeles and support a local business that continues to support our community. Community partnerships are built through relationships, visibility, and supporting one another. I’m grateful to Olveritas Village for continuing to be part of that effort. It was 30 years ago today, I started my career in the non profit and social justice sector. It was my first day as a community organizer for The Wall Las Memorias Project. I was a party promoter at the time. The job definitely set the life course for me. Today, I stand as the executive director for the Latino Equality Alliance, a county commissioner and mayor. Cheers to 30 years of service. 🙏🏽🙂💪🏾

Yesterday, I had the honor of attending the 2026 @alianzalacounty Latinx Conference, representing @bankofamerica LA Business Council, @somoslea (LEA), and @_diversitycollective (DCVC). ALIANZA was established during the height of the HIV/AIDS epidemic to address disparities facing Los Angeles County’s Spanish-speaking Latino/a/e community. In response to limited culturally and linguistically accessible HIV education and care, community leaders and Latino-serving organizations came together to create the first Latine patient conference conducted entirely in Spanish. As I look ahead to 2027, one of my personal missions is to become even more involved and equip myself with greater knowledge and understanding of the needs impacting our underserved Latinx LGBTQ+ communities. As a community leader, I believe advocacy begins with listening, learning, showing up, and supporting the organizations doing this important work every day. It was wonderful reconnecting with so many community leaders and organizations with whom we have built meaningful relationships over the years, including ALIANZA, @translatinacoalition , @genderservices.aplahealth , @the_wall_las_memorias , @bienestarla , and @gileadsciences , while also creating opportunities to foster new community and business partnerships. A special shoutout to my LEA colleague and friend Jacqueline Llamas for her excellent leadership and for moderating a panel during the conference. 👏🏽 Grateful for the opportunity to continue learning, connecting, and strengthening our collective impact. Looking forward to next year’s conference! 🌈❤️ #LatinxLeadership #LGBTQCommunity #CommunityEngagement #Partnerships #Advocacy Leadership Alianza2026

We’d love to have you join communities from across SELA for the Los Angeles County Lights On Afterschool Press Conference & Kickoff on Tuesday, October 13th, from 4:00–6:00 p.m at the Southeast-Rio Vista YMCA located in the city of Maywood . as we celebrate the incredible work expanded learning programs and community partners are doing to support young people and families. The press conference will include a dialogue between local representatives and youth leaders as well as a reception serving refreshments. Lights On Afterschool is celebrated nationwide each October to recognize the impact of quality after-school and expanded learning programs. Here in LA County, these programs create safe and engaging spaces where young people can build relationships, explore their interests, develop leadership skills, and access enrichment, arts, mentoring, and other opportunities that help them thrive. This year we are highlighting the META social media lawsuit which will allocate between $1.5-2.1 billion for youth priorites including mental health. We know there are alot of different agendas for this funding, and this press conference will be an opportunity for us to come together and advocate for funding to be allocated for expanded learning programs. We hope you can join us! It will be a great opportunity to celebrate the work happening across our communities, connect with partners, and most importantly, hear directly from young people about what they want and need. On the screen you can see a flyer with the necessary registration link! Hope to see you there!
