Artist Sonia Payes seeks to present an optimism, a faith in humanity within her sensitive interpretations of environmental destruction, witnessed across a long career and through artist residencies around the world.

Curator and gallerist Robert Lindsay observed that 'a humanising focus within the theme of regeneration is Payes' recurring focus on a portrait image of her daughter, Ilana - an iconic element that in certain works morphs into a four-faced goddess, or in others, becomes a hybrid automaton of the future.'

Noted arts commentator Ted Snell saw Payes' work as an 'interrogation into the condition of life in the twenty-first century, and its possible futures', where she 'captured then manipulated images of her environment to illustrate and reflect upon humanity's resilience...Though never eschewing dark melancholy, hers is an art of faith, hope and aspiration.'

These quotes were taken from 'Transformations: the art of Sonia Payes' by Ashley Crawford, published by Thames & Hudson. You can find this book in the MAPh shop via the link in our bio.

Curated by MAPh Director Anouska Phizacklea, 'Renaissance: A journey of transformation' is a free exhibition and part of 'Environmental futures' at MAPh until 26 May.
