This third issue agrees with the ongoing discourse that cinema is never divorced from politics. We’ve charted a genealogy of filmmakers, solicited essays on nations’ “first” films, urged students to create manifestos, and republished political poetry. Together, these pieces tread upon the Southeast Asian galaxy, barely grazing the surface of the discussed cinemas, like how the universe reexperiences itself through every death and birth of a star.

RELEASE ANNOUNCEMENT
ISSUE 3: COSMOS — Brunei, Thailand, Timor-Leste

We’ve finally wrapped production on Issue 3 and will release the details on when and where you can grab a copy, if the stars align.

Issue 3 brings the cinemas of Brunei, Thailand, and Timor-Leste, constellating disparate cultures and countries. Through dialogues, essays, and archives, their film histories unfold, then intertwine, in perpetual beginnings, becomings, and futures.

MARG1N - Open Call

We are looking for contributors to Issue 3 of the magazine. For the first time, MARG1N will bring together three countries, Brunei, Thailand, and Timor-Leste on the theme of cosmology in Southeast Asian cinema. Cosmos refers to a formless, ever-expanding apparatus. It encompasses creation myths, folklores, magics, dark forests, the occult, and starry futures which occupy cinematic imaginations.

We look forward to receiving proposals that reconfigure or reimagine cinema and its history in new ways—ranging from film analyses, essays, creative nonfiction, and poetry to visual essays or other experimental forms of film writing and criticism.

If you do not have a long-form piece in mind to pitch, we encourage you to send us original images, textual fragments, excerpts, quotes, and other short-form fragments that remind you of the issue's theme of cosmos and the visual cultures or cinemas of the three countries.

HOW TO UNFOLD & FOLD Issue 0, "In Birth of Lost Time" so that it reads like a booklet again after you lay it out entirely.

1. Pinch on either side of the slit (*from the articles sheet)
2. Pull up to make a diamond shape
3. Arrange into the original folds

It's one way to avoid the messy and convoluted refolding of your Issue. This is no ship of Theseus—let us know how you fold it back :)

“My journey began when I traveled to the U.S. in 2010. I saw cuisine from our neighbours everywhere - Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore - but none from Cambodia. I wondered why this was, when our cuisine is just as good. As a Cambodian, I know that we do not have a tradition of writing things down in the kitchen. I believe that cooking is an art form that tells stories about who we are, how we eat, and how we live. In Cambodia, food is far more than just filling our bellies. It has been our medicine for thousands of years.”

Nhum cookbook was published in 2019, and featured at our very own Christmas @ Raintree festival that year. Since then, the book has reached kitchens in over 40 countries, helping not just to protect and preserve Cambodian cuisine, but also to put it on the map.
