"in cloudy states"... a version. Link to the full music video in bio.

In November 2025, Sontag Shogun released a weird, beautiful, and full of life little album, featuring four versions of the same song and a coloring book. They made the stems available for people to play with it further.
So I decided to make a song.
Then, it turned out that the song fit perfectly to a spontaneously made video by me and @wegdeskindes

And here it is now.

"Maybe that’s what a song is at its core — a beautiful expression of a moment to be passed around, through different filters and contexts and interpretations. Maybe a song is a developing story, expressed in sound over time." (@ianrtemple, Sontag Shogun's member and a friend of mine, reflecting on the process of making "in cloudy states")

"in cloudy states" by @sontagshogun (Ian Temple, Jeremy Young, and Jesse Perlstein)

Whatever month it is outside, it’s always summer somewhere.

Honored to see “summer somewhere” named one of the Top 10 Ambient Albums of 2025 by @acloserlisten.

The imposter syndrome is real - seeing my name next to legends like Four Tet, Hammock (my go-to sleep soundtrack for years), and William Tyler (who is in my daily rotation) is surreal.

@acloserlisten wrote that this record is about “remembering the fact that summer is a feeling one can evoke no matter what month it is.” If you’re feeling the winter grey right now, I hope these tracks bring a little sun breaking through the overcast.

Thank you for listening, drifting, and dreaming of the coast with me.

A 9-fingered rendition of our new song “in cloudy states,” played along to the stems. It’s a different beast without a LH pinkie. Also, did you know the stems are available for anyone? DM me for the link if you want to mess with them yourself.

CHOOSE THE SWORD!
SHOGUN ASSASSIN w/ Live Score by SONTAG SHOGUN! Saturday, Dec. 6th, Doors 7pm.
Experience the legendary midnight movie sensation that firmly embedded samurai mythology within American pop culture consciousness. A giddily entertaining, hallucinatory classic of grindhouse mayhem with an immersive live soundtrack by SONTAG SHOGUN on piano, organ, field recordings and analog electronics. Shogun Assassin proved an instant cult favorite that has bubbled its way up from the underground to the mainstream thanks to its influence on artists ranging from the Wu-Tang Clan to Quentin Tarantino.

Sontag Shogun is a collaborative trio that makes use of analog sound treatments and nostalgic solo piano compositions in harmony to depict abstract places in our memory. Textures built from organic materials such as sand, slate, boiling water, brush and dried leaves, both produced live in performance and recorded to weathered ¼" tape warm up the space between lush piano themes. All of which is abstracted coolly in the reflective digital space of treated vocals and a live-processed feed from the piano. Bringing us back, like a faded passing scent or any natural emotive trigger, but to where? The wordless journey there will inevitably be more revealing than the destination itself.

Sontag Shogun recently released Päiväkahvit in collaboration with Lau Nau on Portland's renowned Beacon Sound label.

Ian Temple: piano, organ

Jeremy Young: magnetic tape loops, oscillators, amplified objects & surfaces

Jesse Perlstein: treated vocals, field recordings, and electronics

“One long piece.”

@sontagshogun has a new lil’ EP out. It’s called “In Cloudy States” and it’s built from a single melodic motif, across 4 subtle expressions or iterations. Although so much of our music is pretty, harmonic, textured, a lot of what this band does from a generative, creative standpoint is to start from concept, and experimentation with form, structure, and sound, asking questions of ourselves and one another, and never settling for adaptations of the same playbook. As simple as this four-track collection is, I think the provocation of deep listening asserted to the listener is one that brings subtle delights the closer you allow yourself to tune in.

I hear it as “one long piece” — take a listen:

https://hypeddit.com/5b94n5

Ian likes to talk about “In Cloudy States” as four separate versions of the same piano-driven melody, reinterpreted or reconfigured with four different same-world-occupying expressions. Technically this is correct. We were very clear from the outset about what we wanted to try to do, and how to tackle this material, that we wanted to give our listeners a chance to go behind our band’s curtain for a moment and hear how we hear all of the variations and versions each song we write goes through before we decide on the proper way to present it.

But when you hit play from the beginning and let it run without stopping, it flows so beautifully. I implore you to listen to it from the opening whispers of track 1 through to the final grandiloquences of track 4.

With this set of ears, the variations become more like movements, each stemming from the same root but voiced with new ornamentation, articulation, additions and subtractions. And the whole piece builds to an unexpectedly vibrant conclusion. (The end is worth the wait!)

I’m not sure if it’s just a symptom of some sub-surface life changes for me at the moment, but this music makes me tear up for a brief second every time I put it on, and I hope it wordlessly communicates something pensive or comforting to you as well. And this silly thing comes with a coloring book, which you can use for mental calming, or give to your kids to ruin (like my bandmates have done). Enjoy!
