Photos from the recent “Who Owns The City?” exhibition @threefivefivethree curated by Dr Jacqui Alexander with @monasharchitecture masters students.

Australia’s housing system has become a key driver of inequality.

Through counter mapping practices and data sleuthing, students constructed a forensic picture of landownership in inner Melbourne where escalating real estate values and the demolition of public housing stock continues to displace marginalised communities.

Through a series of risograph printed maps, pamphlets and flyers, the project investigates parcels of land partially insulated from the speculative market and asks if these sites could be leveraged for subsidised and non market housing opportunities.

The emphasis on printed matter in this show reframes architecture in line with its civic obligations through public engagement and dissemination practices.

The project is adjacent to a funded research project by Jacqui Alexander and housing economist Cameron Murray.

It was made possible by the generous support of @monasharchitecture @threefivefivethree and the enthusiasm and hard work of the students. Thank you to all who came to see and celebrate it.

I’m really grateful to an amazing group of people in these photos.
In 2019 @of_wild_patience and I met @ghailokesh he showed us a book about the memories and experiences of people in Ahmedabad related to a fabric weaving factory. The book was printed on pages made from fabric woven in the factory. It was a tangible reminder of what had been produced for many years and what that craft industry meant to people living close by.
LOkesh invited us to Ahmedabad to experience the rich craft heritage of the city and to undertake a project that would elevate the artisans who create beautiful products. Too often creatives or brands render these artisans as a pair of hands or feet in photo to capture the context for a website or social post. And so began the hand/eye project. Eddy and me both created wildly different works from our time at the studios of the block printers and block carvers, Eddy gently playing with the endless possibilities of free design thinking and me structuring a complex impact print. The printers loved both directions, delivering far more than would could have hoped for.
All of this process was wonderfully recorded by our traveling buddies @jessiediblasi and @robgale_picture_this
COVID created a huge gulf between that project and its intended outcome, a cross cultural exhibition about craft and identity.
Fast forward to now and a portion of the project has been realised with a pop up exhibition to support the presentation of LOkesh’s film of his time working with the Ghaddi community, and the launch of his book, The Colour of Plum. The later is beautifully illustrated by our other great craft mate @juliaraath .
Thank you all for the opportunity to be involved.

And this would never have happened with out Bron and Claudia @schoolhouse_studios and our super helpful mate Ben @innernorthcf - thank you, thank you, thank you.

You may be thinking 'wow ! how do we celebrate this change of season : tropical autumn has arrived!' The Japanese way of celebrating the seasons is by lighting these beautiful Uguisu & Daiyo candles. Each set of six handmade rice candles represents a season and here we have autumn. Or tropical autumn as we know it in Melbourne town 🌴🌿🌴#tokyomelbournelife #japanmade #lightitup #tokyomelbournemood #japanfocus #tropicalvibes
