I turned 37 yesterday. Last October I got top surgery (a double mastectomy for gender affirming purposes). Although the decision was years in the making (I initially pursued surgery when I started taking testosterone in April 2022, and gave up the next year when surgery would have been $9000 through the U of U with Medicaid and a 6 month wait - not long enough to raise that money). I gave up for a while because I just wasn't saving money, feeling like I was sabotaging myself or subconsciously trying to stop myself from pursuing surgery. When I realized my Marketplace Select Health plan had a $0 deductible and $3000 max out of pocket, and that Intermountain now had skilled surgeons who could perform the procedure (they didn't in 2022) I jumped on starting the process. Getting the WPATH letter from a psychologist was covered, quick and painless, but it was a 9 month wait for a CONSULTATION with the only covered surgeon in SLC. It didn't occur to me until 5 months into my wait to ask if other surgeons were available 😬 but my care manager (insurance assigned social worker) found me a surgeon in Ogden (at McKay-Dee Clinic) with a 2 month wait time, and after insurance approval it was only a one month wait for surgery. Unfortunately I got COVID the DAY OF the original surgery and had to reschedule (this also happened to me when I had a tubal ligation in 2022) but the wait time was only 3 more weeks. It took about 2 months to get back to full mobility and start bike commuting (I don't have a car) and running again, and I am really happy with my results, aesthetically, physically, and emotionally.

I kept all this private partly because I didn't want to deal with people's reactions, and I wanted to be in an emotionally secure and physically healed space when I shared it. Beyond that, even though it was an easy decision to make, I doubt myself a lot and have a deep fear of being talked out of major life decisions. I don't share things until after I've decided and executed the plan, generally. I was also really afraid it just wouldn't happen. I rushed to get it done because I am afraid gender affirming surgery will soon be illegal for adults in the US. More in comments.

Every trip changes you a little, and that’s the point — to lose yourself in new places, find pieces you didn’t know were missing, and come home a little more you. 🌿✨
