✨2027 Proofs✨

I have been very lucky to be sent these from some lovely bookish folks and publishers (you have been tagged and have my everlasting gratitude, thank you 🧡)

One of the favourite things about being here is finding new debut authors (of which there are a few here)! And also being able to get an early copy of an auto buy author like Max blooming Porter is always so exciting (blooming is his middle name right?!)

Also, there may have been some more arrivals since this picture was taken 🫠, do you want to see those too?! 👀

Are any of these ones you’re really excited for in 2027?!

🧡

Absolutely thrilled that Peck & Peck by Bonnie Garmus is an Instant Sunday Times Bestseller! ❤️💛

I’m so proud to be part of the brilliant team behind bringing this book out in the world! From the big ideas to the tiniest details, it takes a village, and seeing all that hard work come together like this is incredibly special.

Find originality. Reward creativity. Burn the rest. An ethos at the heart of it all that I shall not forget in a hurry.

Its publication day for the brilliant, different, inventive, heartfelt, Peck & Peck by @bonnie_garmus_author. I can’t really believe we are here after the mad build up of the last year. Over the months there have been takeovers of our offices, of bookshops, of book fairs. There have been great days at the printers. There have been a lot of signed copies (thanks Bonnie!). There has been a team, who I can’t thank enough, who have 100% got this book from day one and delivered the most creative campaign that I think Batter Gray would approve of. There has been some beef with the big guys 😜…and there has been much joy - just as we promised when we pitched for this book last December (final pic of where I was - in snowy upstate New York - when we found out we had a deal!).

I don’t publish that many books any more - and it could not have happened without my partner in crime @sophiemorme - but boy have I loved publishing this one. At London Book Fair back in the Spring, an agent asked me if I felt like the industry was watching us? At the time, it terrified me. But now, I hope they are and I hope everyone has enjoyed seeing this book come to life the way we have.

Thank you to the entire team, to everyone who has supported this book and most importantly to @bonnie_garmus_author who is a complete dream to work with.

Go fly Peck & Peck - it’s time for some poetic justice.

Ad: review copy.

Down a little side street in Tokyo is the Torunka Cafe. It’s easy to miss in the hustle and bustle of the city but if follow one of the cats that wander near the entrance and go inside you’ll find a warm welcome from owner Isao Tachibana (and perhaps a rather more disgruntled one from his teenage daughter Shizuku. You’ll be able to get a surprisingly good cup of coffee but may also find something unexpected.

The book features stories about visitors to the cafe, interlinking them with other visitors and staff. There’s a woman sure she remembers cafe worker Shuichi from a past life, a middle aged man seeking out a young woman customers to right a wrong from the past and Shizuku visited by someone involved with her dead sister.

Each of the stories are about how the past affects the present and future, how coming to terms with incidents long past can change how we feel about ourselves and others.

As I often find with Japanese fiction, there’s a slight surreal feel to the narrative, the sense of magical realism without the magical element.

It’s a gently told story, one that pairs well with a warm drink (and a cat if possible).

Translated fiction books | Japanese fiction | short fiction | interlinking stories | character studies
