Our recent wood firing went excellent! It stalled a little towards the end but cone 10 and 11 just about throughout. The results for some community members and students were excellent! So glad to be able enjoy this experience and it's so worth the hard work. I put in a few pieces and I'm looking forward to cleaning up and posting them shortly. With atmospheric firings not everything comes out perfectly and that means some pieces will have to be refired. Even then they all look so interesting in their own right!
I love the little test pieces in here too playing with some of the brick clay a little more with an old slip casting mold. It was on the bag wall and was covered in wood ash. Alongside it was a sample of clay I got from Rovin Ceramics at NCECA. I made the little tea cup in my hotel room just out of needing to touch clay 😅. I'm so excited for the coming summer and the winding down of this semester. I'm hoping that I can make more and more so that by the time that fall comes around I'll have more than enough to play with more soda and wood firing!

Wow. Is it really over?

This year has taught me so much about myself, my art , and what it takes to pursue a career in the arts. To my friends, professors, family and anyone who has helped me along to completing this exhibition; thank you so much for guiding me to success.
I have no words, it is all worth the struggle in the end.

The show is still up all this week! Go check it out if you havnt already <3

Loved being able to be there for the beginning and ending of this temperamental kiln. :)

But seriously I learned so much about firing the wood kiln and I’m so grateful that I was a part of firing it.

I’m literally so sore and I need you guys to know that my shoe almost melted from being that close to the kiln for so long.

Meet Susan Sorohan, a recent BFA graduate in Ceramics from Macedonia, Ohio. Susan’s journey began while working for Clemson University. “While working in the Performing Arts Department, I decided to take a class to see if I could finish my degree,” Susan explains.

Her involvement in the Clemson Staff Development Program led her to meet Lee Gallery Director Denise Woodward-Detrich, who introduced her to programming the exhibit space in the Brooks Center Lobby. This opportunity connected her with Mike Vatalaro, then the Art Department Chair, who inspired her to explore the art program.

Susan’s passion for art was ignited in her childhood. “I have always loved creating things and solving puzzles and did art projects with my mom when I was a child,” she reminisces. Her mother, who made beautiful slip cast porcelain ceramics, was a significant influence. “She was my biggest inspiration.”

Among the artists who inspired Susan, Claude Monet is her favorite. “I love the colors in his paintings and the depth and detail of his work,” she says. Monet’s seascapes, landscapes, and the romantic idea of plein-air painting in the French countryside resonate deeply with her. “I try to capture that feeling when I’m covered in clay, making something out of a lump of nothing.”

One of Susan’s most cherished memories at Clemson is her experience with the wood kiln. “It’s hard work, but the reveal is so exciting! You never know whether something will come out the way you thought it would or be completely different.”

Denise Woodward-Detrich has been a significant influence on Susan. “She is always encouraging, and it seems she knows everybody that has anything to do with art in the area,” Susan says. Working with Denise to curate exhibits in the Brooks Center Lobby has been an invaluable experience, providing immense joy and exposure to a diverse array of artists.

Susan has insightful advice for prospective art students, particularly non-traditional students. “Just go! Do it! Yes, it might be awkward at first, but you’ll get through it!” She encourages, emphasizing confidence and the value of lifelong learning.

Senior Art Trip to DC!! We went to the National Gallery to Art, the Smithsonian Museum of Art, Hirshhorn gallery, and Remwick Gallery. It was such an amazing experience, and I was so excited to see all the amazing artwork that I know so much about!
