🗣️ Get ready for school because this month, we've got a working class student org as our September Community Curator!!! Check out MEChA de UofU and their book recommendations below! The Curator: MEChA de UofU is a working-class, progressive student organization at the University of Utah. While they are rooted in the Latine struggle and its history, they fight for all working class and oppressed students, workers, and staff on campus. The Recipient: The funding will be used for materials, food, and expenses for MEChA de UofU, a working class student organization at the University of Utah. MEChA is in constant collaboration with other progressive student and worker forces on campus, and they always seek to connect with any organization looking for political direction and help. Serving all oppressed students is a core part of theirr mission, especially LGBTQ folks, who we have protested for and defended since MEChA's revival in 2022. SANA SANA edited by David Luis Glisch-Sánchez and Nic Rodriguez-Villafañe This anthology made my heart so happy, even if it was sharing stories of pain. The honesty and openness with which the writers wrote helps to show the individual and collective pain that Latinx people experience. It was also very healing to read the ways that community works to heal us. This book also holds space for Queer, Black, and Indigenous communities, which I appreciate. I loved this book and the librarian whom I returned this book to immediately checked it out! —— #anthology #recentreads #fivestarreads #wehelpeachother #mentalhealth

We are so grateful to Omi Salas-SantaCruz for putting together this brilliant jotería collection! "I think this collection honors community self-determination in naming. Like Two-Spirit and fa‘afafine communities, jotería is the term our community uses for ourselves. We reclaim joto/jota into a proud jotería that names our culture, history, gender and sexual practices, and Indigenous lineages, rather than a generic 'Hispanic gay/lesbian' or gay/lesbian/trans Latinx label. Using jotería in the shelf title and materials ensures readers meet us on our own terms. I have not seen this done in SLC!" Shop the shelf to support AJAAS (Association of Jotería Arts, Activism, and Scholarship) while reading some great books! The shelf includes: 💥 When We Love Someone We Sing to Them: Cuando Amamos Cantamos by Maya Christina Gonzalez 🌈 The Lesbiana's Guide to Catholic School by Sonido Reyes ♥️ The Broposal by Sonido Reyes 💥 This Is Why They Hate Us by Aaron H. Aceves 🌈 Ander and Santi Were Here by Johnny Garza Villa ♥️ Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas 💥 Fiebre Tropical by Juli Delgado Lopera 🌈 Brown Trans Figurations: Rethinking Race by Francisco J. Galarte ♥️ Borderlands / La Frontera: The New Mestiza by Gloria Anzaldua 💥 Decolonize Your Diet by Calvo Luz 🌈 Sana, Sana by David Luis Glisch-Sanchez ♥️ Queen for a Day by Marcia Ochoa 💥 Sideways Selves by PJ Dipietro 🌈 Carlos the Fairy Boy by Juan a Rios Vega ♥️ Queer Brown Voices ed by Uriel Quesada 💥 Nepantla Squared by Linda Heidenreich 🌈 Translocas by Lawrence Fountain-Stokes ♥️ The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo 💥 The House of Impossible Beauties by Joseph Cassara 🌈 In the Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado ♥️ Finding Latinx by Paola Ramos 💥 The Undocumented Americans by Karla Cornejo Villavicencio 🌈 Cruising Utopia by Jose Esteban Munoz ♥️ Born Both by Hida Viloria Image Description: Andrea, a nonbinary femme with shoulder length curly hair, is wearing a printed neon shirt with navy trousers and a blue button up, and Omi, a trans nonbinary professor from Tijuana, Mexico, is wearing grey pants, white shirt, blue coat, and a grey cap. Both are holding up books.

Celebrate this Jotería shelf by Omi Salas-SantaCruz "The Jotería collection offers bold, genre-bending work that brings race, gender, sexuality, class, migration, & indigeneity-centers Indigenous, Afro-Latinx life, experiences & knowledge. The collection moves across desire & imagination, blending novels, poetry, cooking & theory. Together, they make room for complex living & collective possibility!" The Recipient: AJAAS (Association of Jotería Arts, Activism, and Scholarship *graphic is incorrect) is a national network of queer and trans Latinx artists, organizers, and scholars dedicated to creating affirming cultural spaces through art, education, and community action. It convenes the annual Jotería conference and year-round workshops, publications, and partnerships that center Indigenous and Afro-Latinx perspectives on gender and sexuality. Gifts support accessibility and mutual aid for participants, including travel and childcare stipends, ASL and Spanish interpretation, and microgrants for jotería artists and small presses. For so many of us dedicated readers, we’ve turned to books as a means to escape and entertain, for answers, to explore the depths of empathy and imagine a world bigger than our own, to learn what could be. And now we find ourselves in a moment where information is precious, too easily transformed and manipulated, pushed further and further from truth, or erased altogether. This Latine Heritage Month, I look to the Latine writers and scholars who record our history and voices, who share remedies and guidance, who offer themselves in this radical practice of preserving our stories. With them, we can broaden our understanding of who we are and how we can take care of one another. For this post, I’ve expanded on a few of Latinx in Publishing’s nonfiction picks for @bookshop_org LHM sale, which ends this Tuesday, September 30th. I hope these suggestions offer something to everyone, even if just a starting point for some of us who may be exasperated with questions, or help us locate ourselves at a time where we may feel scattered and lost. Books will help us keep moving forward 🤝 ⭐️Use Code LHM25 for 20% off select titles through 9/30/25 on Bookshop.org ⭐️ Please visit the Bookshop link in our bio to buy with us, or donate if you can. Latinx in Publishing is grateful for your support and for sharing our mission ♥️ And Happy Latine Heritage Month to all our friends and allies! We’re proud to share our culture and the long history we’re a part of. 🫶🏼
