It is difficult to describe the feelings I’m left with coming off of a workshop such as this. Over 12 days, about 40 craftspeople from around the world joined up with a group of passionate Romanian carpenters and architects led by master craftsman Mr. Nicolae Toader to construct a building by hand, hewn from oak and spruce, and inspired by the vernacular architecture of the Apuseni region. Under the hot sun and cool moon we worked, we exchanged ideas and tools and techniques, we danced, we debated, and ultimately came together to raise this building up from a dream. It may sound excessive, but these feel like life-changing (or at least life-affirming) moments. We are incredibly fortunate as traditional carpenters in the sense that there exists an international community that is so passionate about learning and exchanging and working together for the betterment of our craft, our tangible and intangible heritage. This is a huge gift. I’ve come home with even more questions than answers (this is a good thing), and feeling incredibly inspired and truly humbled. Endless thanks to the @biserici.inlemnite team—none of us will likely ever understand how much work you put in. And to my fellow participants and new friends, thank you for everything, and till next time..!
