Bringing to life a new play is an often precarious process of stumbling into hopefully good decisions. No one really knows what will or won’t work, so if you’re like me (i.e. a magpie), you’ll surround yourself with exceptionally creative people, steal all their best ideas, throw in a few of your own, and hope that it all hangs together in a conceptually coherent and fabulous way.

My first and arguably only original idea was @paulcapsis. Few friendships have brought me as much joy, perspective, and occasional bewilderment as my friendship with the first lady of Australian theatre, and when I read @anocera02’s heart-stabbing horror-comedy, Capsis’ voice was the only thing I could hear inside my head.

Every other idea belongs to the collective unhinged imagination of my glorious co-conspirators: @oommeg @cpetridislxd @soundslikesweeney @hungryelectra @anth_nico @reichsteinsaxony @chrisasimos, Bridget Samuel, Capsis himself, and, of course, Anthony Nocera.

Where we’ve landed is a nightmarish spectacle that sits somewhere between William Friedkin’s Cruising, David Lynch’s Twin Peaks, Dario Argento’s Suspiria, and the collected works of Windmill Theatre Company — which feels fitting for a messy, ferocious, semi-autobiographical play that wrestles with sex and grief and AIDS and the splintering between generations.

It’s been an immense gift to direct this premiere production and to have a hand in shaping it. For all the leather-clad antics, at its heart Log Boy is about love and chosen family. I love this team more than words can say, and would choose them again and again and again.

There is a scarcity of daring, challenging work like this on our stages, and too few stories that interrogate the lives of gay Australian men. Thank you to @petrakalive and @statetheatresa for backing us so boldly, and to Anthony — for your friendship and for believing in what we’ve created. Substance has never looked so stylish! I adore you.
