Concert 367 was the sendoff to No Model ( @kyfrecords ), at @tveyenyc , along with other bands trailblazing Asian American representation in punk and hardcore: BÖIL, @thetarrys , @brainwashedhc , @dogbreathnyc , @soursoundtrack , and @fermentforever . All of these bands bring such a familiar, yet fresh sound to hardcore, while also speaking on issues that permeate the Asian American experience, both the good and the bad. Hailing from different parts of Asia and uniting them all together and finding community through hardcore music is what I have always loved about this niche scene and no band pushed that message forward as much as No Model did, even with their part in creating @asianamericanunityfest . The whole show was crazy, as expected of a NYHC show, but it also felt so emotional in both the finality and the honesty that came from the talks in between the sets, ranging from topics of abandonment as an adoptee, fascism in Asia, occupied by the US, and even just stories on the bouts of fighting depression and anxiety in a scene that is ambiguous on intention. With this show though, I felt that longed solidarity throughout the whole room, and as Dog Breath said, in that moment, *everyone* was Asian. And that put me in tears, along with just some of the impact of the stories told and experiences shared amongst us. Growing up as a Filipino-American, I didnt find connection with my family, nor made any friends for the longest time bc I was either “too Asian” or “too American”. And there was a lot of shame in that. Hardcore was the one place I did not feel ostracized, and the day I realized this scene existed it changed everything. I felt like I belonged and celebrated it, without glorifying or commoditizing it, but I also still felt like a genuine individual, in a collectivist culture that is NYHC. Though I may not have known you long, tysm for giving me that insight, No Model (& Brainwashed, who are also sadly breaking up). What you all have done for the scene will always be remembered and celebrated, even after youre gone. Much love to the bands, TV Eye, and my NYHC family. Mahal Kita 🫶🏼🇵🇭
