West African Coffee Tasting

west africa grows coffee, and it might just save the world’s supply. 🌍

in 2023 our brother @wheresteveat_now taught us there are over 120 species of cxffee on this planet. every one traces its root back to Africa. we had studied two.

half the land that grows arabica today is gone by 2050. that’s 24 harvests. ☕️

coffee moves $460 billion a year. africa keeps less than 1%.

so what genius is the world missing because of it?

friday we find out. a third species. stenophylla, native to west africa, written off as lost, found wild in sierra leone in 2018. we are tasting the fruit, not the cup. 🍒

11:30am at the club. shout out to our fam at @southeasternroastery who found it, roasted it and shared it. same day they’re pouring it in Old Town Alexandria. two cities. one species. one friday. 🙏🏾

first 10 shirts get the seat. printed on Black-grown @comoco cotton. can’t make it, buy one anyway and somebody in our neighborhood gets your chair.

we’ll also be sharing a sneak peek of something from our friends at @ecotact that will make it much easier to spread the seeds of the future. stay tuned. 👀

Supporting small businesses starts with showing up.

As part of DSLBD’s commitment to being present in the community, Director Rosemary Suggs-Evans participated a roundtable at @thedcpopup with local entrepreneurs to hear firsthand about the opportunities and challenges impacting their businesses. These conversations help ensure our programs, resources, and partnerships are informed by the real experiences of DC’s small business community.

Thank you to the business owners who shared their perspectives and helped move the conversation forward. #smallbizdc

What story is your morning cup of coffee telling?
ㅤ
On the latest episode of Gaia Gossip, Mary Jane Oatman sits down with Candy Shibley, founder of Southeastern Roastery, a chemical engineer turned master coffee roaster whose journey spans family farms, global coffee communities, and industries where women are still breaking barriers.
ㅤ
Together, they explore fair trade, women in the coffee supply chain, cooperative business models, fermentation innovation, and the real cost of what's in your cup.
ㅤ
At Her Many Voices, these are the stories we believe deserve to be heard. The people creating change are often quietly doing the work. We're here to amplify them.
ㅤ
A fresh episode of Gaia Gossip premieres July 9.

We attended our first coffee cupping at @southeasternroastery and it was an absolute delight. Thank you Candy for being so welcoming! We tasted through 6 coffees from Burundi and Rwanda and learned about the sensory aspects as we experienced the cupping and techniques to get the most out of a tasting. Thanks to Barbara @jnpcoffee for sharing about the producers and processes that brought these cups of coffee to life.

At this year’s World of Coffee in San Diego, women producers were front and center in conversations about quality, trade, and market access.

As 2026 is the Year of the Woman Farmer, the role of women in global food systems and the need to expand access to markets and opportunity are more prominent than ever.
