Well, not what I had planned but after spending an hour in Peckham waiting for non-existent @southernrailuk rail replacement buses (quietly fuming at their total incompetence and ambivalence) decided to follow the Grand Surrey Canal (Peckham branch) which is mostly walkable with a couple of very grand bridges. Crossed the Old Kent Road past the throwback that is the Lord Nelson (a reminder that lots of pubs used to be real shitholes) and finally to Bermondsey mile. Alcohol free beer was available at the @cloudwaterbrew taproom which was a jolly splendid way to end the afternoon as the sun went down… #walk #london #pub #history #autumn

Last Sunday’s little day off jaunt (in traditional wet weather) on a @southernrailuk service from St Leonard’s Warrior Square to Eastbourne via Bexhill. This route is one of the only remaining three Southern routes which operate with Conductors onboard.

📍Amberley Circular 🥾 via The Black Horse 🍻

We planned this one for a day out with friends and kept it a little shorter than our usual walks, making it a great option if you’ve got kids in tow too!

The walk takes you through Amberley and the surrounding countryside, and honestly, the whole day completely exceeded our expectations. It was all so beautiful and so English!

We’re already planning a return visit in spring to see the village covered in wisteria, but this time of year is so special too with the changing autumn colours and cosy pub 🔥🍂

And speaking of the pub, @theblackhorseamberley was fantastic. It’s owned by the same family as local @nutbournevineyards (which you know is a fave of ours if you’ve been following for a while!) It’s got rooms too, so definitely worth considering if you fancy making a night of it!

Details below, and the route is in the @alltrails link in our bio (or let us know in the comments if you’d like us to send it directly to you :))

📏 Distance – 6km
⏱️ Duration – approx. 1.5–2 hours of walking
💪 Difficulty – easy
🍽️ Pub – @theblackhorseamberley (around 4km in)
🚂 Trains – @southernrailuk from Clapham Junction to Amberley (normally direct, around 1 hour 15 minutes).

P.S. If you’re visiting with kids (or just love trains!), @amberley_museum is right next to the station, with a working narrow-gauge railway, historic buses and plenty more to explore. We didn’t get there this time, but it would be a great addition to the day! 🚂

Sometimes the best way to check in with yourself is to step outside.🌳

We joined Mind, Surrey Hills National Landscape and local partners for a wellbeing walk, bringing people together to talk, connect and enjoy the outdoors.

It was a great reminder that looking after your wellbeing can start with something as simple as a walk and a good conversation.

What do you do to look after your wellbeing? Let us know in the comments.

Next up for me is a rather interesting service, the Southern service to Caterham and Tattenham Corner. The only service (as far as I'm aware) to both divide and end it's journey within Zones 1-6 #train #southern #class377 #electrostar

Just 90 minutes by train from London Victoria, and you could be spending the day in beautiful Arundel! 🚆

Of course, Arundel Castle is a pretty good reason to visit, with nearly 1,000 years of history to explore, magnificent rooms and spectacular gardens.

Walk out of the Castle gates and you'll find yourself in the centre of the historic market town, with its independent shops, antique stores, great little coffee shops, traditional pubs and plenty of places to stop for something to eat (or a drink!).

There's plenty more to discover too, from the magnificent Arundel Cathedral and the town's museum to the River Arun and Arundel Wetland Centre. And with the South Downs right on our doorstep, you're spoilt for choice.

So whether you're planning a day trip from London or fancy making a weekend of it, Arundel is well worth a visit! 🏰

Had your daily dose of nature?

Sometimes the best conversations happen outdoors.

Today, we joined @ourvoicesurrey , community partners including @southeastcrp for GTR x Mind walk as part of the activities to mark #worldmentalhealthday and #wellbeing this October.

Walking together in the Surrey Hills National Landscape reminded us how exploring and spending time in nature can support wellbeing, strengthen connections and bring people together.

From the climb up Box Hill, to the viewpoints, to conversations along the trail and across the stepping stones, the day was a reminder that nature provides more than beautiful scenery. It creates space to pause, reflect, connect and see things from a different perspective.

Whether it’s a walk around your local neighbourhood or an adventure in your National Landscape, spending time outdoors = wonders for your wellbeing.

Make nature part of your day this weekend. Leave the car behind and check out our rail to ramble routes on our website (link in bio).
