Sometimes, community doesn’t exist until someone decides to create it.

In this clip, Nada Elissa shares what it was like to begin building a clown community in Cairo, Egypt - a place where there were very few clowns. Through following inspiration and having a dream (and many more things!!) today, that community has grown to more than 150 clowns!

This is an excerpt from “Becoming Clown, Becoming Community,” a longer conversation with Nada Elissa, Sabine Choucair, and Gödze Ataly about discovering their clown path and finding/building Clown community.

The full conversation is on our youtube channel.

Across the world, nearly every culture has figures who play the role of the clown, even if they’re never called that.

In this clip, the wonderful clown artist, performer and teacher Gözde Atalay shares how Turkey’s beloved characters, Karagöz & Hacivat and Pişekâr & Kavuklu, embody many of the same dynamics found in clown traditions around the world. Different names. Different forms. The same Clown characteristics.

She also reflects on something deeply moving: in a country shaped by political tension, economic hardship, and uncertainty, laughter can become a way of releasing collective tension and staying connected. Later in the conversation, she shares how introducing clowning has been a balm, creating space for people to express what they otherwise didn’t have room to express.

This is a clip from a longer conversation with Nada Elissa, Sabine Choucair, and Gözde Atalay on “Becoming Clown, Becoming Community,” which will be released in the coming weeks.

In a clip we shared a few days ago Lex Alston reflected on how it was a breakthrough to see the Clown in their context, specifically through black comedians such as Wayne Brady, Martin Short and others …

What clown figures are part of your culture’s stories or traditions? We’d love to hear who comes to mind.
