“With nearly 40,000 undergraduates on their University Park campus, you’d think 28 of them would be good at ultimate.” @dhultimate

1977 matched East vs West. East represented by Penn State @spank_ultimate and West the Santa Barbara @condorsultimate. Then, as now, this was a mismatch as the experienced club players from California manhandled the college kids from Happy Valley.

Frisbee pundits in the media had declared Penn State the favorite because they had advanced through the difficult Eastern Conference while Santa Barbara only played hyper local competition.

If this first clip is any indication, Penn State was in trouble.

They began by getting point blocked and giving up bookends in front of 40,000 spectators at the Rose Bowl. That’s what we call getting spanked 😭

Wrote author, historian and pioneer Larry Schindel “the 77 championship was an important step for the game. It showed us that the sport transplants well. You don’t even have to have a C.H.S. Varsity shirt to play. New people can play now too and play very well indeed.”

“Quick passes by Santa Barbara before the defense is set” declares #ESPN announcer Lynn Shackelford.

Led by @usaultimate founder Tom “TK” Kennedy, Bart Merrill, John Schmechel and a host of others — the Condors had escaped a gritty Foothill team at Westerns comprised of several defending champions from Rutgers in Kalb, Roddick and Al Bonopane, 14-13.

From there this home game was easy times.

Largest end zone ever?

Survey says yes.

From @whamoofficial !

Perfect shot! Aka a breakmark over the shoulder drop-in forehand from the Condors. I guess that kind of throwing lane was more open in those days

Like other American endeavors, the Condors simply declared themselves “World Champions” and printed up a commemorative disc to sell

From the great Larry Schindel, ultimate first writer and historian:
