POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

If you’re heading to the Gallery this weekend, make sure you bring your young folk along to make their own puppet in our new shadow puppet theatre from our brilliant studio holder Zoë!

Our Gallery craft activities are always free to drop in, and suitable for all ages (child-free adults, please get stuck in too).

Come along and get creative 🔦

The Gallery, shop and Tea Room are open 10am - 4pm Tuesday to Sunday. Closed on Mondays.

More about Zoë:

Zoë Eady is a multimedia artist and maker of things. The focus of her practice is on making beautiful and engaging physical objects (glass, wood, plastics, paper) through experimentation and problem solving. She draws influence from illustration, narrative, and observational daily drawing. At the heart of her practice runs the reoccurring themes of nature, and play.

Forest Shadows invites you to create your own shadow characters and stories in this illuminated woodland theatre.

How it was made:

Zoë combines both digital and analogue processes in her creative practice. Every part of this silhouette design started life as an individual hand cut paper shape. She later translated them into laser cut wood for strength and durability.

She explains that doing everything digitally makes her work look lifeless and flat, whilst doing everything the analogue way limits the scope of what can be achieved. ‘The trick is to find a balance and use it as a tool and not a medium.’

Thank you to Catherine Morton for the loan of the overhead projector.

In the centre is an illuminated circle of tracing paper with a black shadow puppet of an owl in the centre. The puppet theatre is on a large wooden table surrounded by tall cream curtains in the gallery. There is a table filled with craft equipment in the foreground. ADRIFT
Sure, we go through phases where we feel a total lack of direction, a lack of purpose, simply not feeling complete. Feeling lost within our own head. Like every single door is closing in. No meaningful help to be had… Whilst we are surrounded by unconditional love from our family and friends.

Curled tightly into myself, trying to find my centre. Somewhere between crying and screaming, as I observe the world around me, is it getting increasing harder? Turn on the news, certainly seems that way for sure.

I made this piece as a way of giving those feelings a shape. Perhaps that is one of the reasons I make. To take something I cannot quite articulate, discuss, and form it into art.

Pleased with the indigo texture which I’ve achieved with this piece. A technique I’m progressing and will feature in future work. 🩵

Apparently we've been none stop for a whole week and we haven't even had a chance to recap on our Still Life session! Here's a few little bits from the day. Thank you as always to everyone for coming through, it was a pleasure to host you and your creativity. As ever, an absolute honour to have the incredible @oscarsfloristry come in and do such an amazing arrangement for us to work from, honestly blown away but how brilliant it was.

Obviously a cheeky little shout out to the lovely @silvergreyfoliage for the healthiest looking flowers we've ever seen and taking the time to pop in and chat, always a joy.

If you missed out this time, make sure to keep an eye out for future events or sign up to our mailing list to get updates straight to your inbox.
