Pueo, the Hawaiian short-eared owl 🦉

We’d been chasing this one post to post for about fifteen minutes when the sun dropped behind the mountain. I pulled the teleconverter off… gave up the reach for the light… and hoped he’d sit one more time… thankfully, he landed closer than he had all day.

The Watcher
.
We couldnʻt find the hawk we were looking for. So this one found us instead.
.
Spent the morning driving Mana Road… a reported ʻIo hotspot… and came up empty. Then on the way to lunch in Hilo, an adult perched roadside like heʻd been waiting on us.
.
A few frames. A takeoff. Pau.
.
Hawaiiʻs only native hawk, endemic to the Big Island. Always a privilege, even when itʻs brief.

Pele’s Well

The first sunset that we attempted, I took literally zero pictures. The next day we came back with low expectations and left with a very wet microfiber towel
.
This drain doesn’t give you an easy shot… it makes you wait for the big surges, brace for the splash, and hope that the timing off all that will arrive when the light does. Sometimes it doesn’t. This time it did.

The Tree of Infinity

We keep coming back to photograph this Darwin tree… from a variety of different angles with the Milky Way positioning throughout the year, to using it as a subject for last year’s comet… perhaps its the tree that keeps on giving
