Supermoon rising through the peppermint gums at our workshop on Turrakana /Tasman Peninsula .. . This is the largest supermoon to arrive this year, with another (smaller supermoon) expected next month . A supermoon happens when a full moon coincides with the Moon being at or near its closest point to Earth in its elliptical orbit, called perigee. This proximity makes the Moon appear larger and brighter in the sky than a typical full moon . Key factors that make a supermoon . Elliptical orbit: The Moon’s orbit isn’t a perfect circle but is slightly oval-shaped. This means its distance from Earth varies throughout its orbit . Perigee: This is the point in the Moon’s orbit when it is closest to Earth . Apogee: This is the point in the Moon’s orbit when it is farthest from Earth . Full moon alignment: A supermoon occurs specifically when the full phase of the Moon lines up with its perigee position . Brightness and size: A full moon at perigee can appear up to 14% larger and 30% brighter than a full moon at apogee.
