‘New SANTA FE INVITATIONAL to launch in April 2027 with 45 International Galleries.’

The Santa Fe Invitational, a new international art fair conceived as a 'cultural summit', will hold its first edition April 8–11, 2027, at the Santa Fe Convention Center with around 45 galleries plus talks, installations and performances across the city.

Santa Fe is getting a new international art fair. The Santa Fe Invitational will hold its inaugural edition from April 8 to 11, 2027, at the Santa Fe Convention Center, bringing together approximately 45 international galleries alongside artists, collectors and cultural institutions.

The announcement, reported by CULTURED @cultured_mag (Exclusive), Artforum @artforum , and USA Art News on October 9, marks the first fair of its kind in the Southwestern United States.

Designed as a cultural summit: alongside gallery presentations, the event will stage a conversation series featuring figures such as critics Jerry Saltz @jerrysaltz and Roberta Smith @robertasmithnyc ; performance by designer Cynthia Rowley @cynthiarowley , plus satellite exhibitions, site-specific installations, and tours of private homes and art collections around the city. A COLLECTORS CIRCLE will bring together collectors and patrons, while a CULTURE COUNCIL of year-round ambassadors will promote the fair's mission.

Stein has said the model grew out of a belief that culture happens when people have a reason to gather and a place that makes them want to stay. For two decades his Tesuque Village Market has served that role locally, and the Invitational is designed to extend the same connective logic to the international art world, with an emphasis on fostering collaborations among the next generation of local arts leaders.

The launch follows the success of boutique, location-driven gatherings such as the Marfa Invitational and reflects a broader shift toward regional art hubs challenging the dominance of coastal fair circuits. Santa Fe, long known as an artists' mecca with institutions including SITE @sitesantafe and its famed Indian Market, adds a commercial tentpole to a city already central to the American art calendar.

THANK YOU ARTFORUM 🙏 SANTA FE INVITATIONAL | APRIL 08-11, 2027 ✨ SI❤️YOU @artforum 💋

“Collectors are not born—they are cultivated through curiosity, knowledge, confidence, and meaningful relationships with artists, galleries, and institutions,” says Marfa Invitational founder Michael Phelan, who serves as the creative director and curator of the forthcoming Santa Fe Invitational @santafeinvitational . “If we are able to create the conditions for discovery and engagement, we are not simply building a market for today, but helping shape one for tomorrow—cultivating the collectors who will sustain art and culture for generations to come.”

The outreach to arts-focused and unexpected collaborators alike includes partnerships with SITE Santa Fe and the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA), as well as an appearance from DART, a women-led platform blending art and motorsport, and members of the local lowrider community. “At a moment when the traditional art-fair model is being reconsidered across the global art market, I believe the contemporary art world has an extraordinary opportunity to imagine a different future,” says Phelan, “not simply another fair, but a cultural summit built around cultivating the relationships, knowledge, confidence, and curiosity that allow collecting and contemporary art to flourish. For me, that begins with creating a more human and relationship-driven model for how art is experienced and collected—beginning in Santa Fe, connecting to the world, and evolving for generations to come.” —Isabella Bernstein | CULTURED ✨

Can you tell we had a great time??

May Mayhem. A month of art fairs, auctions, openings, galas, dinner celebrations, soccer matches, and countless miles traveling back and forth to spend precious time with my father.
A month lived at full speed, ending with saying goodbye to him, and then a heart full of grief but gratitude for the time we had together.
Hoping June brings a little stillness, quiet moments, and space to reflect. ❤️
