I’m back today celebrating another album anniversary! This time we head back to the second wave and discuss The Get Up Kids sophomore album. It’s crazy to think about but after years of researching emo, this band falls under the latter half of the second wave. There is a clear distinction between early 90s bands and what would subsequently become the more well known second wave bands. As the 90s progressed the sound gained a certain lightness to it that leaned more within indie rock, rather than hardcore. The Get Up Kids played that brand of chaotic twinkly emo rock and in a sense defined the changing sound in 1997, with their debut. But on their second record they added keyboardist James Dewees and this took the band to another level. Their heartfelt songs were now elevated with a pop accessibility. It was the beginning of emo-pop in the best way possible, this record also was one of the first emo albums on Vagrant records. It would kickstart a chain of bands ultimately being signed to the label and by the new millennium Vagrant would be synonymous with emo acts like, Dashboard Confessional, Alkaline Trio and Saves The Day. It’s hard to understate the importance of this album in the grand scope of emo, and while it wasn’t what broke into the mainstream it was one of the first records of the second wave to gain notable traction through a bigger label and even appearing on the program “120 Minutes” on MTV. Happy 27th to this album, after all this time it’s still an emo landmark.

My go-to answer for “Favorite bass player?” is @sprinkletown (Rob Pope). I love these little melodic lines he’s always sneaking into Get Up Kids and Spoon songs. “Let the Reigns Go Loose” by @thegetupkids
