POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

It’s all-whales the way. One goes to an international marine mammal conference to talk about Bryde’s whales, and they turn up everywhere (an exaggeration) along the humpback highway.

We know absolutely very little about these whales in Australian waters. The last few days of citizen science has pumped up so much more knowledge!

Thank you to all the contributors!

More sunset breaching tonight made for a special evening with @srdronography and @cetashean. It’s impossible to miss breaches when the calves are breaching so often. Once again, my favourite lighting.

A wonderful whale day today. Humpback Headquarters was the perfect spot for filming them. A full house here today with @srdronography @cetashean and @rotor_and_reef. We are having a competition to see who gets the most views and comments. Help this girl win against all these boys. Comment on and share my reel to help me beat these boys.

Morgendliche Sprünge 🐋🪽...🌅
Wer liebt morgendliche Sprünge noch?
🐋🪽...🧡

This young humpback cleared the water just as the sun came up.

The whales traveling along this coast are partway through one of the longest migrations of any mammal, a round trip of up to 10,000 kilometers (about 6,200 miles) between Antarctic feeding grounds and the warm subtropical water off Queensland where they breed and calve.

Most of them pass within 10 kilometers (about 6 miles) of shore off Cape Byron, close enough to watch from the headland as they go.

For whale photography, patience and watching their behaviour is everything.
I try to anticipate where they’ll surface while keeping a respectful distance.
This humpback suddenly launched into a full breach, so it was one of those incredible moments where you just have to be ready and keep it framed.
That unpredictability is one of my favourite things about filming whales from the air.
