What do we leave behind for one another?

Lately I’ve been thinking about letter writing, mail art, artist books, and the small objects we make and keep for one another.

A letter. A postcard. An artist book. A photograph. A journal. A small edition sent through the mail.

These objects carry traces of both the person who made them and the person who kept them. Over time, they become more than things. They become part of a relationship. A record of a particular person, place, friendship, or moment in time.

That’s what makes mail art and artist books so compelling to me. Artists have been using the postal system, correspondence, publications, and editions as artistic mediums for decades. The work doesn’t always look like “important art.” Sometimes it arrives looking like ordinary mail.

And then you keep it.

Years later, it becomes something else entirely.

It makes me wonder what we’re leaving behind now. Will our children find boxes of letters, or will they find text threads and screenshots? Will an email archive ever carry the same strange intimacy as a handwritten letter that someone folded, put into an envelope, addressed, stamped, and sent into the world?

I don’t know.

But I do know that art collecting doesn’t have to begin with a gallery wall or a major purchase.

It can begin with an artist book. A print. A photograph. A small edition. A piece of mail.

Something made by another person that you found interesting enough to keep.

Maybe collecting is, in part, simply deciding what deserves to remain.
