Most people don’t understand that grief doesn’t just go away. A month or so after my dad died, a lot of people in my life stopped checking in on me. I felt overwhelmingly isolated and depressed and was tired of trying to talk about things to people who couldn’t relate.
One of my friends who had also suffered a major parent loss referred me to @thedinnerparty. After giving one table a try, I realized that what I truly needed was a community of people who were new to loss… so I decided to create one. I went through host training and put together a table called Fresh To Death.
The TDP team warned me that it was a bit niche and it may take a while for the table to fill up, but to my surprise, the requests to join started pouring in. Before the first meeting, there were sixteen (!!!) other people who had lost at least one parent between January and July of 2022. These ladies (pictured and not) have been my absolute rock since our first meeting in August. We’ve laughed, we’ve talked candidly about the worst moments of our lives, we’ve cried, we’ve commiserated, and through it all, we’ve built an incredible bond. This past weekend, seven of us got together in real life and I’m not sure I have the words to convey how much it meant to me. I’m beyond grateful for these people and for this experience. 🤍

We really put the “for better or for worse” to the test this year. Thank you for holding me up figuratively and often literally through the worst six months of my life; for sitting with me through the tears, the restless nights, and the traumatic flashbacks; for being my legs when I can’t stand and my voice when I can’t speak; for being patient and loving, even when I’m entirely catatonic; for listening to me talk about everything and nothing; for honoring my dad’s memory with me every single day — not just because you love me, but because you love him, too; for not letting me walk through the fire alone. Already a week has passed? How ? Miss this! I can’t believe this actually happened, after the year we had. We definitely deserve this.
